cf.com is hard to beat, if you need someone in a pinch. wanted to try the wahoo on sun a little closer to the full moon but weather had us changing plans last min. hooked up with bgf last min and as always he fit in with our crew nicely, another great fisherman for the upcoming season! trip out was rough and we quit short of the gthole after 3hrs and lines in at sw banks. weather layed down a little and water temp was a constant 69deg. lots of life with turtles,sunfish and schools of bonitas and skipjacks. caught a few of the trash fish and found a big school of 30lb+ blackfin bustin bait and managed 1 30/35lber before they sounded. never found the wahoo and called it early with a decent ride in@33kts.nice to get out after 5 weeks on the hill and any day on the water is great! always a good trip with realfish01, fishcrazy, zack and bgf.
Definitely the biggest BFT for me. What a great crew to fish with! I fully enjoyed the day, even with the snotty seas.
Had some sushimi and also seasoned some medallions with salt, pepper, and a smidge og garlic and ate them with a drizzle of Spicy Slather Sauce. If you have not tried this stuff… get some at any Piggly Wiggly. It is similar to a Thai chili sauce, and is made by a lady I went to school with years ago. Dot of Wasabi and ZING!
That’s definitely a stud. You should have weighed him in the trident. A fish like that has a chance. Also, I would think that he is closer to 35 than 30.
Thing was a PIG. Thought it was over 35lbs but may have just been pumped we caught something finally! Think it was a bigeyebluefinyellowfin tuna though haha
Don’t think so Skinnee… from what I was told the record is 42#… I’m sure we were not there. It was a hog though.

I'm telling you man! That's a big one. We got a 37# fish a couple of years ago that took the trident and your fish looks more "prehistoric". The eyeball on that thing is almost the size of the guy's sunglass lense. Though, judging the weight on a blackfin is sometimes difficult as they seem to be shorter and girthier than your typical yellowfin. You could indeed be correct, but I would have liked to see that one hit the digital scale.
That is a big BFT. The state record is 40lbs 6oz. I would say you would have been close. Either way good meat on the table. Congrats on the catch and thanks for the report.
skinneej, this is a bad pic of a 36lb+ I weighed in the trident last yr, a little hard to compare but I don’t think bgf’s went over the 40+ record! some people call it cat food, I can tell you it is great fresh and with wasabi and soy raw, its outstanding! You tried the lobster yet , Pm me I got some #s for you, My #s a little shallow for this time of yr but the boys on spearboard.com have been killing them in 130’ the last few weeks!
Negative on the lobster lately. Hard to get excited about diving here. Diving here is mediocre, but this is the time of year for sails off the beach and wahoo in the Bahamas. They caught sails in 35’ of water the other day. One guy reported pulling over on the side of the overpass to watch sails ball bait… That’s pretty close when you can see them from your car.
So what? It’s still a stud…
It may not be on the same level as YFT, but is sure is better than skipjack or bonita. If you bleed it immediately, collar it and ice down the gut cavity, it isn’t bad at all.
It sure as heck beats no tuna at all.
