Well, folks, I decided to punt today and give surf fishing a shot. Went to one of my favorite spots at north Folly today. Managed to find a particularly sweet sharks tooth (fossil), and when I got to my spot, I was delighted to see a rather sizable bonnethead cruising just a matter of feet from the edge of the water. He was gone by the time I got a rod baited up.
Anyhow, I’m just a bit surprised that I saw no mullet at all in the water, and the only hits I got were so small and weak that I only had 1 hookup (9" whiting).
There just seems to be so little bait around, compared to years past, and so little action. I know last year was a terrible year for shrimping, and this year looks like it might be even worse. I see some other guys on here that are doing OK but most of us seem to be really struggling.
Either way, it was still a gorgeous day.

The only thing I know is that we’ve had a lot more rain this year than last. Perhaps that has something to do with smaller apparent numbers of mullet and other baitfish. I have caught more dink trout and flounder this year over last though. Last year my average trout/flounder were larger. Reds seem to be biting pretty normal for me.

We’ve had more rain than in the last 20 years. Salinity is way down. It will improve soon.

I sure hope you guys are right. I am certainly shocked at the amount of rain we’ve had. Hopefully it’s not washing massive amounts of pollution from the upstate… particularly liberal amounts of political pollution… but that’s a different problem altogether.

We’re about 8 inches above normal for the year, and half of our year’s totals fell between June and now (20"!). I guess it’s just having a bigger effect than I suspected.
