Sturgeon in the Cooper?

I’m kind of a fish nerd. I have watched every documentary all kinds of books and studied fish identification charts. Call me a dork, I like fish. Am I crazy or has anyone else seen sturgeon breeching in the cooper? Look to be Atlantic Sturgeon as the ones I’m seeing are 5’ +. The short nose Sturgeon rarely exceeds 4’. They aren’t giant mutant mullet and they aren’t tarpon as they have a brownish green back an pointy noses and they jump clean out of the water. I have been fishing up river from bushy park about 2-3 miles in semi brackish waters for cats and big reds. These guys are jumping in one particular area that I can tell. Along red bank for the cooper river friends. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Yes they are here. I got one in the cast net once and almost trashed it. They are a light brown color.

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

I almost had one jump in the boat with us in the Dawho river, just off of the N. Edisto. They are definitely here.

Gar? Rivers are full of them, and they are on the surface all the time.

Dnr tagged a bunch of sturgeon and released them at the tees. I’m not sure how many but I’ve found one dead floating before in the river.

There was one dead washed up on the beach at Kiawah today.

I saw one jump behind the citadel on the Ashley. It was literally 5-10’ from my boat. 108% sure it was a sturgeon. Think about how close that it to Chas. harbor. Wouldn’t take long for him to swim to the Cooper.

Yes, there are quite a few around. Generally near the mouths of rivers that start as fresh water. My Dad used to fish for them commercially in the Ogeechee with gill nets. Mostly just for the roe. They brought a lot of money. Back when I pulled drag nets for shrimp we used to catch quite a few. They can sure tear up a net!

They are for sure in the Cooper too. Have seen them near both the 526 bridge and the Cooper River Bridge. Surprised they haven’t been caught inadvertently a time or 2 but I haven’t seen or heard if they have.

The Edisto river has Sturgeon that were breaching quite a bit last summer, what a sight… most were around 3-4 ft short-nose sturgeon. I didn’t know they were protected here in SC.

Caught one while I was stationed in CA in the mid seventies. Caught on bottom with grass shrimp. One heck of a fight.
