Just found out there is a sturgeon hatchery on wadamalaw. never heard of people catching them around here. very interested to hear if anyone has on here?
When I was a kid my Dad did some commercial fishing for them in the Ogeechee and Savannah Rivers with nets. Caviar I’ve caught a few by accident in shrimp nets. Never caught one on hook and line.

I was under the impression that it was against the law to target them, but I dont know for sure
i had a drunken fisherman with me in georgetown who swore he saw em jumping years ago. still sticks to his story.
he also so Smurfs and Dumbo on the same trip.
Lots of sturgeon in G-town…not so sure about Smurfs and Dumbo though. Gargamel…I could believe.
It used to be legal to fish for them, but they were recently named endangered so it is illegal to even target them. They run into our rivers in the fall and sprin to spawn and then head back out to sea.
I went out to that hatchery last year with work, it’s pretty cool. I think they actually sell those sturgeon to other states in addition to letting them go locally… I think lol

I heard a story from a guy who used to work for DNR years ago. This was back when they used to track them for research and they had one of the trackers sit at the bottom of the harbor for a week straight so they assumed it died and went to go get the tracker. When they got down there it was alive ugh about five others just hanging out. That’s one crazy fish.
Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
Because the fish are endangered, the hatchery isn’t allowed to release them into the wild yet, so all those fish are used for research

I’ve seen them jumping many times near Savannah. Often mistaken for tarpon. They are around, not a lot of them. I remember my Dad catching some monsters in the 100 lb. range. Biggest one I ever caught in a net was maybe 40 lbs.

just as I suspected. you’re an imbiber of the bourbon. seeing things.
They are EVERYWHERE in the S. Edisto River. They pull out to the mouth during the summer then go up river near Jacksonboro in the Fall. They are downright dangerous when you get in smaller waters as their constant jumping puts a moving boat in close proximity to these flying 50-100 lb missles.
I was shad fishing in the Tail Race with my brother two or three years ago, and we were watching DNR deploying and pulling up their survey nets. We saw them pull a sturgeon into the boat that they caught in the net. At first I thought it was a shark or a weird-looking catfish, but when they were putting it back, there was no doubt what it was.

I saw a dead one washed up in the grass in Goose Creek last fall. Looked to be about 4’ long.
Saw this washed up on South End of Hilton Head this morning:

I went tubing down the Edisto a few years back and saw one jump about four feet out the water. I was spaced out looking to the left side in front of me and caught about the best view of it that you could have gotten it was around 4-5ft big. Then last year I was fishing by the train track in the Edisto and saw one finning that was well over 5ft. I would say it was probably close to 9ft or maybe bigger based on the spacing of the fins, it got me nervous at first before I figured out what it was because I just threw out some old fish that wasn’t getting hits but was really drawing the bugs to my canoe.

There are lots of em down in st.simons, ga. during the summer. The altamaha river is loaded w/ big ones upward of 200lb range. They free jump like crazy. I used to see while fishing for tarpon. They would bust the menhadens just like tarpon. Never hooked any thou
