Sturgeon

Have you seen one? Where?

Can you fish for them? How? I would imagine fighting a 7’ long dinosaur on rod and reel would be a BLAST!

In my week on Edisto we saw about 10 free jump at different times around ■■■■■■■ Cut and St. Pierre Creek. One jumped about 4’ to the starboard side of my boat as I ran past it! Scared the hell out of me…I swear it was 7’ long.

Good friend of mine had one jump in his scout he had docked on the Edisto. It was dead when we found it and spoiled. Crazy looking fish.

They are the “pork” chops of the water. Very good table fair. Had a few when I was very young. Not sure the rules on them back then. Those that did not rip a shad net to pieces usually went home with the net holder. Used to be many sighted way up the Salkehatchie along with some monster Rockfish. I’ve heard they are still in the Combahee, but the Edisto holds more.

Fishery was shut down in 1985.

That’s my question…I can’t find anything that says it’s “shut down,” just that one caught has to be returned and not harmed.

So does that mean you can’t fish for them? Likely I would never even try, just curious really.

I had one almost jump in my boat a few years back in the dawho river very close to the N. Edisto. I was running flat out and like you, if I’d have been 6’ to the left, it would have landed in my wife’s lap! I swear that thing came within a few inches of hitting the side of the boat when it landed.

Leadenwah, I personally don’t know anyone that has specifically targeted them with rod and reel, just a few that have inadvertently caught them in a net.

When I was up North they had charters for catching them on the Lake of the Woods. They used whole Shinners or Night crawlers on the bottom… like fishing for a catfish. They had a month harvest season where a person could catch one per calendar year.

Have seen them multiple times on the edisto above the 17 bridge, nicknamed one “cinderblock” cause that’s exactly the sound it made when it jumped out of the water… caplooosh ! Wouldn’t want to hit one at speed… I understand they are a protected species here …
