suggested gear? noob

Looking at getting into fly, any suggestions on everything would be helpful.

Not looking to spend a hell of. Lot but few hundred for starts.

From what I think I understand, I’m looking at some 8wt for reds/trout/inshore?

Somewhat understand the ideas behind the line, backing and leader, but what’s the deal with tippet?

Apologize if beating a dead horse, just link a thread or what have you.

Tfo professional series with a redington surge reel about 230 for the setup! The surge is a sealed drag too

I would the tfo from the guy who posted the spring cleaning Post

I love my Redington Crosswater combo … I paid $89 for it Rod, Reel, and Lined … Had it for 2 years, kept it clean and have had no problems, if you’re looking for the cheaper route this is a good way, I am currently shopping for a larger reel and plan on spending more money. Mike, or Scott can advise you of a mid to an upper-end reel …

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

i like the redington stuff- esp the new predator rods…a little mo $$ but da chit. get a good line and dont worry as much about the reel- the $99 sage 1680 with the sealed drag is a steal and performs great dispite the lower $ tag.
the redington pursuit is a great combo- as is the crosswater. tfo as well-

Redington pursuit.

There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.

Albright gpx in 7/8wt or 8/9wt on sale now for $113 on the Albright site. There are some good resin reels for under $50. You can get a Quest II #3 from LL Bean ($40) or with 8 or 9 wt line for $75. Bean will also let you upgrade the line. I currently use the Quest on a 9wt.

Orvis has the Encounter reel, a similar reel for $49, and better lines are available on the sale page for $29. Buy both and I think they will add the backing and put the line on for free.

buy the best line from either of the major brands, learn how to rigg and tie a good leader. understand to balance leader to line to what ever rod you end up with.

Visit The Fly Shop in mount pleasant the guys will hook you up! I went in there the other day and was really impressed with the staff, there was one guy I talked to for almost a half hour about different spots and he even got on google earth and showed me an area that had been under my nose for a while and didn’t know it. Good people up there. I have a TFO lefty Kreh and for a lower price tag that thing performs as well as a higher end rod in my opinion.

All good advice above. I have tried everything, and have high $ Sage, but TFO is hard to beat for the money. Spend all your $ on the rod and get an 8 wt. buy as nice a reel as you can afford AFTER you have the rod. Buy a quality WF 8 wt line and u are set.

Ok, i think I’ve decided on the rod, a TFO Lefty Kreh TiCr-X.

That said now looking for reel, looking at a sage 1800 or 1600, I believe somebody suggested the 1600 one already, but any thoughts on those or suggested others??

Side note what is the benefit of changing spools? I noticed the 1800 had quick release spool change.

If you are looking into fly fishing, I’d urge you to spend some time at a local fly shop. Fly fishing is not difficult, but it is not quite as intuitive as spinning or casting gear fishing. An hour or so in one of the fly shops, and you can have your gear rigged, understand a bit about maintenance, and get info on local trout/redfish flies. Another pro-tip is to get an experienced caster to help you a bit. The guys in the fly shops will gladly teach you, and again- effective fly casting just is not a real intuitive motion. One last bit of advice- buy your gear locally. I live in Greenville, and we lost 2 good fly shops. We have a guy trying to make it here now, but it is a tough business. Trust me, you want a good local fly shop…

i do plan on buying locally, for the most part.

As far as my questions go, they are mainly towards the gear. I have fly fished, succesfully, before with a relative(now deceased) when I was younger, around 12/13. I believe i could pick my cast back up no problem, or so i hope. I’m just the type that is always open for discussion on a lot of things, and always like advice, wether good or bad.

I will probally go to one of the flyshops in charleston, charleston angler etc, or any that you guys suggest. There are none around my area, so I have to look prior and get a good idea of what I’m looking for.

oh and one more reel I’m pre considering is the charleston anglers/fly cast outfitters, any thoughts on that?

I have the Sage 1880 on my 7wt and Ive never caught a fish on it that needed a better drag. The only complaint I have with it is that it corrodes badly. I wash mine down after every use with fresh water and some soap. Still corroded after being washed. Take VERY good care of it if you get it. Also look at Allen reels. The Alpha II is a nice reel.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Man… that ain’t good. Even the old Medalist reels wouldn’t show corrosion after a good rinse after a saltwater fishing trip. Do not buy a reel that has parts that corroded after a good rinse.

I’ll take Pez at his word but (), I would search the web about this potential issue. Don’t buy a reel that corrodes after being rinsed. Lots of reels out there that don’t corrode.

I have a sage 1680 on my 9 wt. I’m pretty sure its almost exactly the same as the 1880, and I haven’t had any corrosion issues with it for the 4 years that I’ve had it. You also might want to look into the Lamsons, like the Konic and Guru. If you’re willing to spend some extra money, the Nautalis FWX is an awesome reel for under $300. I couldn’t be happier with the one on my 7 wt.

Id cast the BVK as well before you settle on the ticrX . IMHO, it casts much much better, but everyone has a different feel for what action there’re after.

Nice that you note that. That would be my number two choice.

Should a local/any fly shop allow me to test cast a rod before purchase?

absolutely
