Suggestions for DIY back seat rest installed in transom

I’m thinking 0 degree rod holder and “custom” back rests. Any ideas out there? Anyone done this before? My aft storage areas have cushions, just no back rests, so looking to make an upgrade to the boat w/o spending 1k.

Birdsall sells them in different configurations/lengths.

Yes, and Thanks. I actually have a quote from them for a pair of back rests and 0 degree rod holders, around $600 before tax and shipping.

Researching a DIY option by reusing old leaning post back rests and buying “cheaper” rod holders on Amazon. Maybe there’s not enough money to be save this way. IDK

Also, Any input on installing the rod holders in transom without backing plates??? I really don’t have a good way of getting to the underside of the transom to install backing plate and through bolts. Am I asking for trouble by using just screws?

Pretty sure the leaning post/rod hold drop ins are deigned for 10 or maybe 15-degree holders, or at least mine are. I have this set up on my leaning post on my cc and on a bench seat in my flats boat. I believe a 0-degree would have you sitting straight up and down, not very comfortable. The Birdsail product that uses the flat stock aluminum uprights is slick, that what Hewes has gone to. I wish they had that product when i did my bench seat.

Through bolting would be most ideal but it really depends how thick the glass is in that area.

Thanks Contender. These will be custom made from Birdsall. I need 0 degree due to configuration of transom.

Researching more and thinking about screws and 5200. Once I put these rod holders in, I would never remove them, so that seems to be an option.

Feel free to comment on my 5200 idea.

I love 5200 but the only way you will ever be able to remove is if you are lucky enough to be able to get a guitar string underneath if far enough to cut it. Personally I would not use it on this application because you never know if you might need to remove them for one reason on another. Good luck, I put some 0-degree in the transom of my Contender. I was able to see through the bilge to confirm all clear behind but was still nervous as all get out drilling those big holes. Not sure where that area drains to on your boat but keep in mind water passing though rod holder when cleaning etc.
