suggestions for kayak club

this is a short little survey for club ideas:
1.do you want a formal type club(officers, dues, etc.),or more of an informal club concentrating on tourneys,camp-outs,fishing trips, etc.?
2.what are you looking to "get’ out of being in a kayak club?
3.if you chose informal club, should this just be an “online” post when youre goin fishin, etc. thing,or have meeting periodically to discuss events?
4.do you favor having members tourneys where we handle our own tourney vs trying to get sponsors etc.?note:it was said last nite that dee said he would have to have 60 yakkers to break even.sounds ridiculous to me.
5.where would you want to meet for meetings if there are gonna be any? bar-non bar
6.please answer these questions on this post.if so,we will know where we stand.

i will start the ball rollin here.i think an informal,no dues, pay as you go club would be good for a start.(this could always change later).meetings could actually be held in a post so everyone could have input on a subject everytime.hold in person meeting once in awhile.when needed.i think based on what im hearin about tourneys that we should hold our own tourneys.yak people know how to hold yak tourneys.also for the guys that were there last night,if youre not online, someone that is could keep you informed on everything going on.this would open it up to people not on this site and not on internet.this would make fishing trips/functions easy.people could commit right online saving the hassle of showing up for a meeting just to discuss one item.every club should have a name,so here is my nomination:port city kayak anglers ok thats my .02

My vote would be for a more informal meeting structure, with more emphasis on fishing trips, fun tourneys, knowledge sharing ,camping etc.

I agree with surfman and 5151 - I like the informal meeting and club structure - which could always change later. It will be good just to be able to get up with people for tourneys and for fishing trips. +1 for Port City Kayak Anglers.

We have a great club and forum here on C.F.com. Personally I don’t see the need to drive all the way to Chas. without my rods and boat. I like the idea of posting when we go out, so that we could try new places with people that know the area.
We can have out meeting at the boat ramp:wink:

Informal sounds good to me and taking care of business online is good but I think that in person meetings are good once in a while too. Even if they just entail meeting up for lunch or dinner after a day on the water. I think that our own tournys are cool but as we figure this thing out, maybe do an annual charity tournament where we get sponsors and such to raise money for organizations such as Kid fish and such. TKAA does one tourney a year and raises massive amounts for their charitys. the rest of the time they just do sandlot tourneys for croaker or what ever, who ever shows up throws in $5 or $10 and winner takes 1/2 the other 1/2 goes to the club to help pay for their site and initial costs on their T-shirts and hats. You’d be suprised at how much support you can get from the industry by holding a charity tourney, TKAA had 4 different companies donate yaks for prizes not to mention rods, paddles etc… we could join the tourney trail that starts in Jax, hits Va beach w/ TKAA and ends in Jamaica bay with which ever club that is. meeting location is where ever as long as nobody is excluded due to the location such as over 21 to sit at the bar and what not. I kinda like Scott’s suggestion Blackbeard’s kayak fishing Crew. Why do I always type so d@mn much?!

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching

formal simiformal meetings in person once every 2 to 3 months our own tournaments but we go out and find sponsors to donate merchandise or money show and go fishing trips camping trips meetings where ever people want inshore kayak association ika i dont know about this top of the head but i like something that would look good abreiviated for tshirts and such

I think it would be cool if we gave all $proceeds to a charity (if we collect any) and biggest fishes and pictures get posted:smiley:. Maybe a fishbag full of useful items … splitshots, grubs, anything to winner of big fish that we target? donated voluntarily by members and sponsors??
I am just throwin my opinion out, up for any fishing… anywhere.

c-mullet,if we do this club thing mostly online, the only thing thats changin is i think alot more people will post fishin trips, and we can
do these tournaments that i know alot of people want.maybe some campin trips, etc.i always believe in charity to the right charity.
pictures and braggin rights go alot farther around here than money anyway.im still learning yaks and i wont lie.i need you experienced guys to show me some things.everybody will get something good out of this.and if the meetings and subjects are mostly online-what does anybody have to lose?

I’ve helped form/run clubs for different activities like this, and one common mistake is to get over ambitious (meetings too frequently, events that require too much work/planning) before the club has sufficiently gotten off the ground in terms of membership. I think the key is to get the ball rolling with a discussion like this, spread the word to other hobbyists as well as local outdoor shops (have them put up signs, posters?) and plan a couple easy fun meetings or outings- kayak fishing basics, fall paddle and camping on beach X, member day tourney or whatever. Once you have a following, more complicated events like larger tourneys for charity or whatever will fall into place. Internet forums are a great way to keep up with everything and everyone. Also, a formal gesture of membership seems to solidify the club and member concept- $20 buys t-shirt and membership card- membership cards gets 10% off purchases at local shops…

I know a lot of people like myself that kayak casually, who would be interested and benefit from a club like this.

First, sorry I bailed last night…(I can’t wait till I retire…)
Second, my thoughts are that a group of rag tag Charleston area fisher.uh…persons should post, get together every once and a while to consume a beverage and very informally organize fish meets at various venues as agreed upon by the people wanting to explore different areas and/or methods of finding fish bounty. Money, officers, meetings, make-up meetings, holiday cards…all cloud the intent of a true grit bunch of people wanting just to go catch fish.

I’d rather just say hey Surf, LS, Pat, Fity, CM, DD, SF…you get the picture…let’s roll - your place or mine??? - Kinda like we do now…but adding things like that thing happening down south here soon, or like LS and them boyz from FLA say they do it down there…Just my $.025

Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.

Edit by request of OB to add: Brilliant minds discuss all three - Nice OB…
