Suggestions on a new reel

I bought a new rod over the weekend. It’s an Ugly Stick “Lite Pro” 7’ medium action. Now I need to buy a new reel. Something “all around” that I can use on a down rod, jigging, or trolling. I’m on a budget, so I don’t want to break the bank on it.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

Spinning or casting? Spinning I would go with a Penn battle. There were some battles on the swap shop board a while back. casting I would go Abu 6000 off eBay. The 6000 are about 55$ versus 80-95 fora 6500cl3 and they are pretty much the same reel.

Sorry, I forgot to say casting. Thanks Chip.

If you get a 6000 off eBay and its not smooth or really dirty I can fix it right up for ya. I go through all that I get off from eBay. I like the 6000’s cause they are red…lol…they don’t make them anymore and eBay is the only place I can find them. The only difference between them and a cl3 is a 6k has one bearing and a bushing in the spool. The cl3 has 2 bearings. U can make a 6000 into a cl3 for about 8$.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ABU THAT SAYS BCX OR KALADEX.

If you don’t want the Hassel of eBay I will sell one of mine and give u a 2 month warranty on it for 70$. Comes ready to fish with 20# BBG and a fresh cleaning/lube job.

If you live east of town you may want to check c&j sports formerly a&b outfitters. They usually have those reels for the same price and they are new or former display models. They are on HW 34 in Ridgeway SC.

Murrymaker are you saying you work on reels? I used to know a guy named Don Cooper in Lexington that did work for me but last I heard he moved to florida. If you do let me know I have some work for you.

Most of mine are ABU reels and I love them, but I have nothing to say against the BPS Megacast, they are cheap ($37.99), durable, dependable and I feel not much difference when using them for DR, FL, jiggings etc. You may want to read the reviews.

I’m glad you said that about the megacasts, I’ve always wondered if they were decent. Of course now I might want to talk to Chip too. I’m in need of two reels myself. I have one of the Shakespeare bait casters that came as a combo with the striepr rod. It’s decent for bait fishing.

Before everyone starts coming at me with 70$ (if that’s what steve is talking about) lol. I was trying to help Bob out. I only have 12 and would just take that money and replace the one I sold…hahaha I keep 12 and feel like I am missing something if I lend a couple out. My wife calls them my second family. One day I would like to have 2 sets of 12 like some of the people I know.

But if you get a Nasty one I can fix that.

Bomber I do, sent you an email back.

Sorry Chip, I didn’t mean to sound like you were selling off your stock, more along the lines of maintenance. I saw your rebuild/cleaning post a while back, but every reel I’ve taken apart was worse off after I put it back together.

Lol…no problem. Yea man just get up with me. I can pretty much do any CASTING reel as long as it is a star drag. I dont like doing spinning reels at all…lol…I can do lever drags but really only do mine. People say levers are easier but I dont think so. Gonna do a couple for bomber and anyone else that needs some done shoot me a PM or email.

I agree with the 6000 folks. They are great reels and will handle most anything you can manage to hook in Murray.

I’ll get back with you Chip. Let me check Ebay and see what’s there.
Thanks.

Got all my down rods stolen out of my boat last year and had a rowe with State Farm, had all 6500 bought over many years! Ended up ordering 8 new BPS Megas for $29.99 and they have been used a lot and haven’t had any trouble with them. They have good loud clickers, smooth leval wind and cast well with cut baits .I mated them with 9’ light action down rigger rods for $19.99, also work well with boards and freeliners. Cant beat 8 rigs for $400.00
