Since Ed’s (bugcatcher) report was a blend of at least 3 different trips, here are a few pictures of what we enjoyed on Sunday.
Thanks to Captain Marvin and his trusty crew of free divers (Mark & Zach), we had about a picture perfect day on the water. Ed, as always, was prepared for anything.
Left out of Wapoo Cut at about 8:30 & ran by Charleston Scuba’s boat (Trinity III?) as we were passing through the jetties. A little bit of surface slop, but it calmed down about 5-6 miles past the rocks. Not quite “Lake Atlantic”, but very close.
We had a smoooooooooth ride out to the Subway Cars that the DNR folks planted back in 2001 (IIRC).
Here is a like to what they ONCE looked like: http://www.charlestondiving.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22&mode=threaded&pid=22
We did a little bottom fishing, but only brought up a bunch of BSBs. I think we had a keeper or two, but they were not what we were looking for. Mark & Zach were doing some free diving, and tried to scout out the cars for us, since the sounder was giving us a strange return. Once they spotted the cars, it was time to drop the marker line and gear up.
Ed and I hit the water for our first dive, and this was our view from about 40 & 80 feet:

I didn’t even make the bottom before a big cobia did a fly-by. Gotcha! Probably one of the easiest shots I have ever taken. Came in slow, and gave me a quick broadside shot. Perfect conditions, too. No current, plenty of air, great vis, well above the wreck, so even if I didn’t stone him, he wouldn’t have been able to drag me into the structure.
Didn’t have a scale at the landing, but all of the pieces/parts weighed about 48 lbs, after cleaning. If we lost a few pounds of blood & guts, this is solid 50 lb fish.
