Sunday, 6/24 report with UW pics

Since Ed’s (bugcatcher) report was a blend of at least 3 different trips, here are a few pictures of what we enjoyed on Sunday.

Thanks to Captain Marvin and his trusty crew of free divers (Mark & Zach), we had about a picture perfect day on the water. Ed, as always, was prepared for anything.

Left out of Wapoo Cut at about 8:30 & ran by Charleston Scuba’s boat (Trinity III?) as we were passing through the jetties. A little bit of surface slop, but it calmed down about 5-6 miles past the rocks. Not quite “Lake Atlantic”, but very close.

We had a smoooooooooth ride out to the Subway Cars that the DNR folks planted back in 2001 (IIRC).

Here is a like to what they ONCE looked like: http://www.charlestondiving.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22&mode=threaded&pid=22

We did a little bottom fishing, but only brought up a bunch of BSBs. I think we had a keeper or two, but they were not what we were looking for. Mark & Zach were doing some free diving, and tried to scout out the cars for us, since the sounder was giving us a strange return. Once they spotted the cars, it was time to drop the marker line and gear up.

Ed and I hit the water for our first dive, and this was our view from about 40 & 80 feet:

I didn’t even make the bottom before a big cobia did a fly-by. Gotcha! Probably one of the easiest shots I have ever taken. Came in slow, and gave me a quick broadside shot. Perfect conditions, too. No current, plenty of air, great vis, well above the wreck, so even if I didn’t stone him, he wouldn’t have been able to drag me into the structure.

Didn’t have a scale at the landing, but all of the pieces/parts weighed about 48 lbs, after cleaning. If we lost a few pounds of blood & guts, this is solid 50 lb fish.

Awesome!

That viz is unbelievable!

My advice is my opinion only. I may have gotten that opinion from something I read while sitting on the toilet. Please keep that in mind when reading my posts, the information may not be correct.

nice pics

Awesome

You free dived after SCUBA? Not sure that is very healthy with residual nitrogen in your blood…

Nice pics though…

Mark & Zach did the free diving on the Freddie Day… Marvin was able to hang out on the wreck for a few seconds. I was more of a snorkeler than a free diver, by that time of the day.

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?

What did y’all see on the ■■■■■■■■ Day? Sheeps, Spades, triggers?

Great pics on the dive. I enjoyed them.

Roger that. Figured that I would share since the topic doesn't usually come up that often.

Glad you like the pics. The video is MUCH better! The viz was amazing. I have been diving Charleston since the '90s, and this was the best vis I have ever seen. We usually have at least one theromcline or a layer of sediment, but we were 79 degrees, top to bottom, no current, no silt, no sediment. Best filming conditions I have ever seen. Still need to edit the video & post up a few good segments.

To answer your questions… Zach & Mark saw a few BIG gags on the Freddie Day, but they didn’t say anything about sheeps or spades.

OH… One more thing… The subway cars were LOADED with triggers! Big buggers!!! I don’t like shooting them because they BITE!!! Seriously. Shot one a while back, and he about bit through a 5/16th steel stringer (wish I was kidding). I don’t mess with them, any more. Like “honey badgers of the sea”! I would rather deal with a 11 foot sand tiger, than 4 lb trigger.
