What a windy day! Got the toonboat cranked up and fished the spoons today. I wanted to stay out of the wind, but that wasn’t producing very many bites. So we moved into the wind and ran the trolling motor wide open trying to stay over what few hungry fish we could find. My cousin and I caught some decent sized perch and a keeper striper each. All fish were caught in the elbow area between 28’ and 34’ deep. I broke off one big fish, probably either a catfish or striper. It hit on the fall which makes me think it was a big striper. I think that’s his first experience perch jerking. He said he really enjoyed it. We only caught fish on the 3/4 ounce Cotton Cordell spoons today.
Good job Spoonmaster! Chip hooked me up with shad this afternoon - and me and my First Mate left the dock about 1pm.
Pulled PB and corks around humps and points in C12 and C13 for an hour or so until I got tired of fighting the wind. Headed across the open water to pull in B13 and get out of the wind - came across a LARGE bait ball in C13 - 40-50 feet down over 55 feet of water. The wind now died down so I dropped DR between 40 and 55. In the first 15 minutes, had several spit hooks with shad hooked through the nose - so I switched to “back stabbing” them. Caught 8 shorts between 19 and 20 inches in the next hour plus a 23" and 24" to cap off a beautiful fall day.
The next photo is not fishing related - but cool. This is a bee hive about 25 feet up in a hickory tree in my front yard. Looks like pancakes hanging from the tree now - but this summer it was covered up with bees - the “pancakes” were not visible - just a solid mass of bees. I found it while trimming some branches this summer. Just a cool example of one of God’s creatures doing their thing!

Nice work you guys! Spoon, I guess the heavier metal was more successful due to your having to fight the wind. You were able to maintain better bottom contact than with the 1/2 ounce Berry’s. Glad your cousin had a good introduction to spoon jerkin’… I didn’t wet hooks today. We slept til 9ish, went to the gym, cleaned the yard, and grilled some steaks. Enough turkey and caseroles already!

Yeah, I told him a couple of times to make sure the spoon was making bottom contact and he did well. We were constantly having to adjust the amount of line we had out due to the wind gusting and pushing the boat backwards. I think it would have been a challenge even if I had an iPilot with spotlock yesterday. Still, the best time to go fishing is when you can…
