sunday fishin 2

Went out this afternoon and caught the last 90 minutes of the outgoing tide. Found fish around a creek mouth dumping into the ICW and caught 3 lower slot reds and a nice keeper trout on soft plastics. Then pulled out the fly rod and caught my first red OTF. He was a little fellow but had plenty of attitude.Missed one at the strike and a nice fish spit the fly half way to the boat. all in all a fine afternoon.

when you run the fly action do you sight fish or just cast to random “good looking” spots??

I found em with plastics and switched to the fly. When the tide went slack the bite quite and I got on the trolling motor and ran about 200 yards of flat but couldnt find em before I had to leave.

I dont think i did a very good job answering your question. What I have been doing is what I call prospecting. On any tide besides dead low I am hitting my usual spots and when I find fish I switch to the fly. You can prospect with any bait you have confidence in, plastics, cranckbaits , or even live bait, whatever you have confidence in. At dead low I will work flats close to where I found fish and that is when I am looking for fish pushing water, birds, bait, anything that will show fish are there. Then you can throw your weapon of choice at em. Hope I made some sense.

sure did! thanks! i use live bait so often but im starting to get a feel for these arties and my granddad taught me how to cast a fly years ago but i would like to give it a try in the near future

First red on the fly is a great feeling. Do you tie your own? If you don’t, you should try it sometime. Another great feeling is when you catch one on a fly you tied yourself. Congrats.

Yeah, been tyin a while now, thanks to Bart and David at s/ville chas angler. It is really cool to get a bite on your on creation.
