Sunday Morning High Tide Flats

I only had time to fish for a couple of hours on Sunday morning, right at high tide. I loaded up with bait on Saturday afternoon and then headed out around 6:30 am on Sunday. Beautiful morning with almost no wind, no bugs, and partly cloudy skies. Water temps were around 78 in the creeks. I fished a couple of flats that I don’t fish very frequently between the 526 bridge and the 41 bridge on the Wando. First flat on the last of the incoming I got two nice reds, 29" and 27" on cut mullet. One on a carolina rig and one on a float rig. This flat was right on the Wando.

Water was too high, about a 5.5’ tide, to actually see tails but the fish were pretty active pushing around. After an hour or so I moved to another flat at the end of a long, long creek. I had never been all the way up this creek on a high tide so I explored the flats a little and found some more reds pushing around, even saw one tail on a flat someone had marked with a cane pole. Caught two more nice reds on this flat on cut mullet. Again one on a float and one on a carolina rig.

When the water started to move out I moved out to a spot on the creek that is a classic outgoing tide spot. I’ve always had good luck at this spot. Big corner on the creek with several feeder creeks, an oyster rake, and a deep hole. Managed a couple more reds, several nice trout on the trout trick, and a small flounder. Actually caught one of the trout after I had put down the rod to reel in the flounder. There was enough current to bounce the trout trick along the bottom and a trout picked it up. Had a double header with the flounder. Luckily neither fish was huge so I got them both in the boat. All in all a nice couple of hours on the Wando.

very nice report. good pics

nice read.

Posting a picture of a flat where you caught nice fish…might not be smart.

Do you recognize the flat? It is fairly well known, just a pain to get to. You need a small and shallow boat to get on it even on a high tide. My guess is that with no landmarks in the photo, it won’t be overrun!

I haven’t been up that way in probably a year…and I know right where it is. Just putting it out there if you like you spots to yourself, don’t post pictures of them. If you do, don’t be surprised to have four boats sitting on it next time you try to fish it.

No visible landmarks… your fine. there are millions of places that look just like that. i spend a lot of time on the wando and i have no idea where that is. just ignore the negative comments, good fish!!!

Good fish, know that spot too, none of em are as secret as people might hope they are unfortunately

When the water is that high the reds are everywhere and nowhere. Just got to find them. Love wading in the grass and hooking up to a big red in chest/waist deep water. Alomost nothing more exciting. Did catch a 4ft bonnethead doing that one day. That was a surprise when I got it close.
