What a beautiful day! Calmest seas for me this summer. It was a treat in my little 19 1/2 ft’er. Still trying to learn this offshore fishing thing. We trolled the ballyhoos for the first couple hours only to pick up some cudas. Had 2 big fish on, but never saw them on top before getting off. Started bottom bumping and raked in the BSBs(14to15"). Seemed to be the only thing in abundance. Kind of wish I would have went on to the 140’ ledge. Oh well, maybe next time. Still waiting on that first dolphin. Any tips would be appreciated.
Next time you are out there this time of year anywhere between 60 and 400ft, keep your eyes peeled for floating objects. Pull up to them with spinning tackle and cut bait to catch the schoolie dolphin underneath. Every now and then, you will see some dolphin over 10 pounds mixed in with the small ones. They also tend to come around the boat in the shade when you are bottom fishing in late summer.
in addition to the shade, phins tips are good ones. dolphin inshore of the ledge, while they are not rare, are not a sure thing. in fact, this time of year, dolphin are not a sure thing anywhere off our coast. try fishing in may and june offshore of the ledge and you will catch one most every trip.
