Sunday perch fishing report

Fished with my good friend Kelly today. Tried out my prototype fish caller with some pretty good results. Actually, I have had it sitting in the shed for well over a year and finally decided (remembered) to take it with us today. I’ll certainly have to thank another friend tomorrow who donated some parts for the caller. I think even Fogman will be impressed with this setup!!
We kept 81 perch. Threw some very small ones back as well as 6 or 8 short stripers. Perch hit the small spoons early and finally started hitting the 3/4 ounce later in the evening. We caught them between 49’ and 61’ deep and on 5 or 6 different spoons. The fish were moving around a lot today and bait pods were hard to find. Only fished both sides of the lake between the gap and Bear creek plus a little while behind Shull island. Water was clear and the surface temp ranged between 45 in the morning and 49 in the afternoon. The only surprise for me was that they actually bit better in the morning than later in the afternoon. I guess the frontal passage might have messed them up.

Glad y’all got on em! I thought it might be tough today with the frontal passage. My buddy and team mate Gary also caught some good stripers upriver. His biggest was 10-11 pounds; so the front didn’t effect the fishing too badly.

Anyone ever try to drop a chum bag down to attract and hold perch! I use one all the time when in salt! Might try to put some shad in my meat grinder and try.

Many years ago, for giggles and grins, I put some catfish food in an onion sack, found some perch, tied the sack to my anchor rope, and jerked perch until my wrist cramped. Chumming does work!
