Fished around the gap today caught 25 with 10 keepers avg size of keepers about 27" with a couple over 30". All keepers came on planners and corks. Lots of bait and fish around. A couple of times we could have spot locked several times but the DR fish all seemed to be smaller. We fished from 7-12. It was a beautiful day to be on the water.
Nice Alex! Good looking fish!

What’s the DR Fish? I clearly need to pick up some live bait and get away from artificials. A lot easier said than done in my current situation until 2016.

Florida Boy, a cooler with an aerator will work until you can buy a bait tank. I used one for 2 years and passed it down to Murraymaker until he got one. Not perfect, but it kept the bait alive. It was just a igloo cube with a keep alive.

If you have a built in livewell and it is round you can go with a aerator like this :http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marine-Metal-Products-Fish-Saver-Livewell-Aerator-FS-4-/261794670906?hash=item3cf42da93a:g:jeYAAOSwv0tU8KiW this is what I’m using until I get a new pump for my bait tank. Works good and with the colder water you shouldn’t have a problem.

I actually do have a bait tank. It’s not that. Right now I’m holding off til January to get to Myrtle Beach Boat show and then to Charleston Boat show to get 23’ CC deep V. My options now are my wakeboard boat (not considering) or my dads Jon Boat that he keeps in water in the back of hollow creek. Getting bait and getting to the water at an early hour without doing it the night before is almost impossible. Idk when Neds opens. Plus his boat has less room than preferable by my 260lb self. I’ve put serious thought into my father in laws 17’ bass tracker with a 50 Mercury on it with only 2 hours on the motor. Has brand new heavy thrust trolling motor as well. He only wants $3500 for the whole deal even includes trailer just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I don’t need it but the presence of the good deal eats at me.
Florida,
Bass tracker sounds like a good deal. Biggest three things to look at would be I-pilot Trolling motor, solid bait tank system, and a good graph. My thoughts are with those tools and some time and knowledge that bass tracker could be very effective.
Good job nice fish! Slick water in picture, did the wind not come up later?

Baitwells, like I’ve said before, don’t have to be round. Mine is rectangular, and I rarely loose a single bait. Clean water, salt, and o2 are the keys. If the bait are rednosing in the corners, something is wrong with the water quality.

I’ve fished with Fogman enough to know that his rectangular livewell works just fine. There have been some really big stripers caught with herring from that livewell, including my personal best. Also, you don’t need to be out early to catch stripers. So, take your time, get good bait, keep them happy and you can catch stripers all day long.

The wind stayed calm until about 9 But never got over 5 mph.

Oh but it is that easy rick…lol…
Funny story
This past summer I was working the shop on a sat morning to give ned/carolyn a break. Guy pulls up and is super excited to be going fishing. He buys 3 Styrofoam buckets (think they may hold a gal of water) buys 3 bubblers, 3 sets of batteries for the bubblers.
I had seen it done before, and figured he had forgot his transport tank and just needed to get them to his boat. Figured he was getting 3 dz 1 in each bucket. NOPE! He was so excited to go fishing he bought 9dz 3 in each 1 GAL bucket. When he told me 9 I tried to talk him back to reality, even offered to put them in a zip lock instead but he assured me they would be fine. That all he had to do was go out and drop’em down on a carolina rig on the humps on the main channel. I gave him the thumbs up and told him good luck. Would have like to have seen those baits within 20min. This was early summer when the bait was still coming out of murray so you know it was big…lol…

Sounds like your day was a little better than ours. A lot of shorts with a few keepers (21-22") mixed in.
If reading forums and fishing reports made me a pro, I could deff quit my day job. Unfortunately, I am a pro until I get the boat in the water… then reality sets in!! This sport is deff not as easy as it reads!! lol

Some very interesting points… True. The high percentage of success several of us have has not been a quick, easy road. Even after 3 decades of chasing these fish, they still sometimes confound me. That’s what keeps me coming back. The learning never stops.
Success in striper fishing also means different things to different anglers. To some, it’s simply catching fish, while to others it’s catching keepers. Still to some, it’s catching “wall-hangers.” If the later were my measure, I would have a low success percentage. 2 to 3 fish in the 20+ pound class on average per year is all I have mustered over the last 5 years. However, with respect to boating limits of keepers, we’re 90+ percent. It’s all in the perspective we take.
It takes time on the water to be successful. Understanding the nature of the fish, seasonal patterns, weather, and lake conditions is key. Sometimes we make it look easy. Occasionally, we look like fools. At any rate, the enjoyment is in the pursuit.

I guess I should have said you don’t need to be out early at this time of the year to catch stripers. Also, you need to be in the right area of the lake using the best technique(s) for the current conditions and you will probably be able to catch them all day long if you have fresh lively bait. An old addage says 90% of the fish are normally in 10% of the water. I think they’re somewhat scattered now, but we all still need to figure out where that best 10% area is to fish.
