sunday topwater bass w/ pics OTF

Slipped out to the family pond yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours. Took the 6 and the 8 weight with me and threw a green/white popper on the 6 and a black popper on the 8. Hooked into a couple of nice fish that probably went 2-3 lbs but when you’re standin up in a jon boat holding a 6 weight when they’re making a run for the trees in the water it feels like a pretty big fish. Only missed a couple of fish that were probably small bass or bluegills nipping at it. Did have one bass hit it hard and when I stripped and picked my rod tip up he cut right through the tippet. It worked out ok because after a minute he spit it out and it floated back to the surface and I was able to paddle over and get it back. The knot had held, but about a half an inch up the tippet was popped clean.

All fish were caught in the edge of the bank in the shade or next to trees laying in the water. I fished from about 5-7pm and it was still pretty warm but they were still willing to eat. No one has fly fished much out there so I think the fact that it was just something different brought them out a bit. It was also a good sign that I caught a couple of bigger bass for that pond. We have had a lot of small (< 1 lb)bass and it goods to see some healthy growing bass.
Enjoy the pics…

Nothin wrong with those big mouths otf…fixen to head back home and “brush up on my casting” in a buddy’s pond of mine.

“There is a strange sense of pleasure being beat to hell by a storm when you’re on a boat that is not going to sink.” JB

yea it’s pretty hard to beat stripping a popper while standing up in a jon boat with your knees shaking in anticipation of that BOOM on top! I did a lot of traditional fishing for a couple of months with the spinning real so it took me a little bit of time to get my rhythm back when I started throwing the fly more. It’s like riding a bike…
