Sunk my boat and need help 5/17

Was out in the harbor Saturday 5/17 and an ignorant person with a 30 to 40 foot boat decided they wanted to plow right by me and my fianc? about 50 ft away and I had 4 foot wakes capsize my boat and flipped my boat, I had just got new rods and lost those which was $1200, lost my boat, and lost a brand new yeti cooler, today I had to get a friend to come out and tow our boat which was out at the tip of the north jetty thankfully cause the anchor grabbed. The boat is practically trash now. If anyone has found the cooler please let me know it would really be appreciated! Thank you and god bless

Man that really sucks. I’m glad you and your fiance are okay. Even if you had the registration numbers for the boat, I don’t think there is anything you could do from that stand point…I could be wrong though. Hopefully you had/have good insurance.

Wow, that sux  Sure glad nobody got hurt! Every boat is responsible for their wake and the damage it causes. Did you get the boat’s name or registration numbers?

Unfortunately no I had now time, at this point though I would just be happy to get a cooler back.

Also I would like to thank those who got us out of the water and helped call coast guard.

i got about 40 gallons or so over the bow when a 70?er ran past me the other week. that was in an offshore center console and i came to a stop after seeing the 4-5?waves standing straight up. i hate when people drive like that. would dragging large weighted treble hooks around the area help to maybe snag a rod? could be worth a shot to get back a little $$$

I don’t have a functioning boat any longer

Whether it helps or not, my father in law has an ‘88 Bass Tracker 17’ aluminum boat with a 2006 Yamaha or Mercury 50HP with only 2 hours on it, new trolling Motor, new FF and GPS along with others and trailer. He’s looking for $4,000.

That sucks. I would have thought there were other boats that could have ran that guy down for you or called the CG to ID the boat while someone else was assisting you. I hate to say it if that guy didnt know he flipped your boat he needs to be off the water. He had to know how much water he was pushing. Glad your safe.

I do have one question; Were you on anchor when the wake hit? I have read posts that say be ready to cut the anchor line when the container ships pass so you dont get swamped.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Glad you’re alright. We saw your boat as we were coming in around 3:30 yesterday. Called it in to the CG and were informed that they already knew about it and that two people had been picked up.

Glad to hear y’all are ok, We was heading out yesterday am and heard the Harbor pilot call CG to report and abandoned vessel. After listening for a couple mins and realizing the pilot was outbound I stepped in to offer assistance. When I got on scene I relayed all info I was asked for and CG told me that this was result of a case opened on Sat and that I could continue on my trip. Sorry for your loss.

Man, glad you two made it through that ok… that really sucks in a lot of ways. Truly sorry for the loss of your boat and gear.

Redfisher, what do you need in terms of fishing or boating gear? I don’t have a boat for you but I do have a fair amount of extra tackle and gear that you are welcome to.

Glad you were not further out! It seems that if the offending vessel was keeping a good lookout they might have noticed your plight and helped you.

I don’t know if this site can help you track down the boat or not, but give it a look:

It’s a lesson for all of us to keep an eye out for those big boats that throw big wakes. Recall last summer a containership threw some 5-6 foot wakes on us at the Grillage and we were only saved from being swamped by my friend getting on the motor and getting us moving and giving us some slack in the anchor line. If that anchor had been tight, I’m sure we would have taken a wake over the bow.
