I’ve heard that some sunscreens have stained folks’ boat seats. Have any of you experienced this? If so, are there certain brands to avoid? I’m getting a boat soon and don’t want to booger it up with stains (non-fish-related that is) if I can help it.
the spray sunscreens are the worst. I usually ask people to apply that while we are still at the marina but it doesn’t help much. Turns your cushions orange and who in their right mind would ever want that color on their boat.

Sunscreen will rub off of your skin and turn even the gelcoat orange! At least it does with the brand that we use…“banana boat” I believe?
bad for cushions and super duper bad for any clear curtains you may have,i ban spray on sunscreens from my boat…
So the lotion kind doesn’t seem to cause the orange stain, regardless of brand? The spray kind is a rip-off anyway IMO.
no…no…the lotion kind stains as well! At least it does with us.
I use the lotion all of the time. Whenever I’m sitting on the bow with legs over the side doing my “stealth” paddling through the grass, I leave a nice orange stain on the gel coat finish. It will come off with a little waxing or with hull cleaner.
my boat stays in the garage so it doesn’t need sunscreen…

I have fought this as well and found that certain brands (Coppertone) tend to stain while others (Neutrogena) do not. Spray vs lotion does not seem to matter.
Watch out for a brand called “Mawie Babe” or something like that. That stuff will turn your boat orange and it will take strong acid to get it clean.

I use the bullfrog quick gel or dry gel (something like that) and it is not greasy and it has never stained any part of any boat i’ve been on.

I use Bullfrog too. It is great stuff. I usually keep packs on the boat and give them out, several guys have said they like it because it does not mat up the hair on their arms, legs and chest, and never leaves a greasy type film. Never stained my Gelcoat.
Bimini top is the best sunscreen!!
No Ad and bullfrog seem to not bother the cushions.
We use both spray on (various brands) and lotion (Coppertone Sport), applied at least 30 minutes before leaving the dock. Have never had it stain cushions or gel coat. We’re down home folks. Maybe your riders have had spray tans?
Tropical weight pants, really thin long sleeve fishing shirt and a buff and cap. Most likely you will stay cooler this way too. I dont ever use sunscreen, I hate it. It is not good for line/leader, sunglasses, or pretty much anything it touches. Somewhere in my mind it cant be too great for our skin either.

All sunscreens, bathing suits, bird crap, drinks, etc will eventually stain seats. The trick is to keep your cushions treated with a vynal protector and you will be all set. Soap and water and everything will wash right off.
That’s the trick.
For what it is worth, I’ve never had this issue and I always use top shelf sunscreen. Not sure if it is the cheaper kind that is doing this, but Blue Lizard doesn’t stain and is very very good stuff. They sell it at Harris Teeter and it is the kind of stuff that your dermatologist will suggest you use. Good stuff and not much more expensive than the cheapo stuff.
