Been gigging from my SUP a lot lately. I seldom use my boat any more. My last trip out on my SUP rigged for gigging: Native versa board, 3 warm white cheap 12v underwater floods from amazon, gorilla duck tape, crate with 12v marine battery in back, cooler up front… after experimenting with different types of lights, brackets I found duck tape and warm white floods are the way to go.
how big of a board is that and how much do you weigh? any stability issues? I’ve heard through word of mouth that a 12V underwater can produce some electrical current in the water you can feel. Any experience with that?
I’m 5’11" 175 and it’s pretty stable for the most part. With the battery strapped in the crate it is very stable… it’s easy to fall off of but next to impossible to flip with the heavy battery keeping the center of gravity low. I always wear a life jacket and shoes in case I have to make a rapid dismount.
I sometimes hop off in shallow water if I gig a big flounder and usually that’s not a problem unless I step in pluff mud. That happened last month and I sunk to my waist… I have a new respect for that stuff.
Very cool ElCid! I’m planning to build a hollow wooden fishing SUP this winter. There’s something special about moving slower and nearly silently through the water.
