Maybe these will end up on our boats soon. Trolling motor batteries with 20 year shelf life, and they charge 70% in 2 minutes…That’s what I’m talking about baby!
Good stuff! Would be great to see a reasonably priced boat application down the road. Give it time, and most technology seems to come down in price.
Aaron Martens on the B.A.S.S. Elite tour uses lithium 12V deep cycle batteries on his tournament boat. At about $1,000 EACH they ain’t cheap. Though they are reported to last about 800 cycles - or approximately 800 fishing days. Also about 1/3 of the weight of a lead battery (about 30lbs for lithium vs. 75 or so for lead).
Can’t help but do the math (occupational hazard ). If you fish one day per week on average - 800 cycles would equal about 15 years. $2,000 for a 24V deep cycle set-up would cost about $133/year over 15 years. That’s ~$2.56/fishing trip - if the weight differential alone saves you one gallon of gas per trip …
Not sure about the cost of a charger for lithium batteries.
I get a funny feeling my First Mate would not be thrilled about a draw on the home equity line in order to buy batteries .
Hey - given time this technology may find an economical way into our boats. I think our cell phones have more computing power that the mainframes that landed Armstrong and Aldrin on the moon!
