I’ve been wanting to explore the Upper Wando by putting my SUP in at Paradise Landing and doing some fishing from it. Any pointers for someone who has never been to that stretch of water? Incoming v. falling tide? Structures v.banks/creeks? All help appreciated!
also posted this on kayak forum but didn’t get any bites…maybe the yak crew hates SUP’s!
Awesome water up that way…hit the docks and points that are a short paddle from the landing. Good trout and redfishing up there. I did the exact same thing that you’re talking about one day when my boat plans fell through (short weather window, didn’t want to mess with the boat), unfortunately (stupidly), I left some of my stuff in the bed of my truck…very costly mistake. Pack your stuff up tight…if they’d only popped open my gas tank they could’ve ridden off with everything!
That is a great place for all SUP. The water is calm, the traffic is low, and the fishing is unreal. I think you should tell all your friends about this place including our kayak friends. I couldnt have thought of a better place. Matter a fact the third dock on the left north off the ramp holds some huge redfish, then the bank on the left south of the ramp holds trout.

Thanks for the input folks…maybe a bit of sarcasm from Knot?? Not trying to spoil anyones routine fishing locations, just want to avoid the big marsh lizards and have a shot a few reds.

Last time I was there, the weather was pretty crappy. But if I remember correctly, the docks are an excellent place to fish for Reds on an incoming tide

Maybe a little sarcasm, but the spots I said are for real. Theres a dock north with a statue of a little black boy fishing that dock holds a lot of big reds on the incoming.
Not to dissuade you, but I have seen “big marsh lizards” above and below the Paradise landing. Doesn’t keep me from swimming on occasion, and I have not seen alligators that have no fear of humans. I have also heard of one near the Paradise Island homes that has stalked some dogs.
The current can really roll through there. The big tides result in over 9-ft of exchange from the negative low to the high. Plan your paddle with the tides.
All kinds of wildlife in that river from the big bridge to the tail end. No shortage of fishing pressure on the upper stretch these days, and the new bridge construction and coming development will only congest it worse than it has become. The little ditch of a boat ramp up that way is as popular as a wealthy uncle near Christmas these days. Trucks and trailers parked almost to Pepper Plantation on a sunny day in June. That location used to be bad news for getting your battery and spare tire stolen in the good 'ol days. Nobody who went there left anything loose in the back of their truck, that’s for sure. I guess some things never change, but most of it has up that way. I find it amusing when specific docks are mentioned to hold fish, and I’m sure they do. It’s just that when I frequented that landing and upper part of the Wando you had to visit oyster banks, drop offs, and old ferry boat pilings and feeder creeks to catch fish. There were NO DOCKS!!
