I am looking for some pointers regarding surf fishing and kayak fishing. I just moved to james island a couple months ago and recently purchased 2 sit on top fishing kayaks. My brother is coming up from Atlanta in two weeks and he does not get to fish much so I want to come up with something special that him and I can do.
My first question. are there places in or around charleston that i can access by kayak. I would like for the location to be off the beaten path a little bit. maybe somewhere we can let a dog or two run around and even have an over night camping adenture
Any good ideas of where I could take him for this? I have heard about Bulls Island and Capers Island. Suggestions are really appreciated.
I do a lot of redfish/ trout fishing. but for this specific trip for my brother i am looking to take him somewhere that we can use the kayaks to get too. where we can fish from the surf. maybe have a fire and or camp over night.
am desperate! want to think of something really cool as my brother and i do not get to spend a lot of time together so I want to make it a trip he wont forget!
other questions…
are there any good public yet remote surf fishing locations around the charleston area?
is camping allowed on any of the beaches or islands around charleston?
Is it possible to hook into any sharks this time of year from the surf?
Is the trout fishing and reds biting really good in the creeks still? i have been ussing articial on docks. if all else fails and do not get to take my brother on an adventure. i would like to take the kayaks out and target some reds, trout, flounder

Well the main creek that connects to the creek you posted you live on is a excellent kayak creek. The most private beach area that is public is folly way down around by the light house. You are not allowed to camp on any public beach around here but you can fish all night. When I do I bring a tent to hide from bugs in the morning and evening. A common spot that people go by boat is the backside of kiawah called sandy point. This time of year you might not see any one. Its right at the inlet so conditions can get bad quick and when the tidal coieffcent is high and the tide is running the current is really strong and wouldn’t recommend trying to yak it. When its not high its not bad but conditions can still get nasty based of wind and rain. Sunrise/demetre park is a dog park and nice spot to yak from or spend a day. The James island county park is another spot and if you launch from the dock there is good fishing in that creek. I haven’t went fishing since the 24th I think but they were biting then and I am going today so ill post a after the icing report in inshore section. We don’t have much flounder so I wouldn’t expect many to any of those and as for sharks you can sometimes get the dog sharks in the winter and the rare sand tiger or sharpnose, but those are rare when the water drops below 61 but I’ve caught sharpnose in 57 degree water before and heard of sand tigers being caught in water that cold but I wouldn’t plan to catch any sharks. You can catch whiting, drum, small seabass, and several species of ray in the winter from the surf. I’ve even caught a red octopus before. I hooked a black drum and flipped it over the rocks and when it landed on the other side of the rock the octopus jumped on it and that was in January on the rocks by breach inlet. If I was surf fishing Id fish the rocks on breach inlet and work set by set to I found action. Rocks warm up quicker, hold warmth and bait and attract fish. I’m gonna pm you some info I don’t want to post so check the pm this time. Post in the su
^^^^^^ Tons of advice above.^^^^^^
If you launch from the dock at James Island County Park , check your tides. Current there can be strong at times.
Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.
thank you guys both izzydone and 40inchred for the information. def a good start to planning something special for my brother!
