Surf Fishing Line ?

Just bought myself a new 11’ surf rod & reel. The Penn SpinFisher’s capacity is 250yds of #25 ( I assume that means mono ). What line do you want on your surf reel? I guess it’s between PowerPro braid and fluorcarbon. Also, what size shock leader do you want? Someone help me.

I use 20# mono on my surf rigs, but I don’t do near as much surf fishing as some of the guys and gals in the pier/surf forum…

I use 30lb Power Pro. It will give you a lot more capacity than the 250 yds of 25lb mono.

That braid is vulnerable to “surf knots”, the underwater equivalent to “wind knots”. You gotta watch your lines even closer as current moving along the beach can lead to line crossings or tangles you’ll spend some time undoing, or cutting away expensive line. First season you may want to try mono, figure out your target species and how you want to fish for it.

As for shock leader. Mine is 5 wraps on the spool plus the length of the rod plus about 3 to 4 feet of hanging line down to the weight. I use the weight I’m throwing times ten for the pound test of shock leader.

for example My 11 foot surf rod for throwing 6oz N bait has a 15 foot 60 pound test shock leader.
My 9 foot for throwing 4 n bait has a 13 foot 40 pound test shock leader.

When in doubt go up in line weight. you don’t want a 4 or 6 ounce lead missile flying down the beach at 150 miles eper hour

Put enough mono on top that you can’t cast it all out (about 100-150 yards) and fill the rest up with a power pro backing of the same size. Make sure you tape the pp to the spool or do a few wraps with mono first to ensure it doesn’t slip.
You’ll need 2 reels with similar line capacity and a line counter to get it right the first time. After that, just remember the numbers and it’s a simple process.

Yep.

250 of 25lb is more than you really need for the surf.
