I am a Freshwater Fisherman for the most part and have been all my life. I am coming down for a week vacation Mid July and plan on doing some surf fishing.
I’m not trying to take anyones spots or family tips or nothing…
I just want to get out get some fish with the family and not get shutout…
I have done some looking on my own… looks like everyone is using popping corks in line with mud minnows. Any tips on where to get the mud minnows down there or any other tips would be great.
What is running in Mid July? I see Reds, Drum and trout…
I have never used popping corks from the surf. Try some cut mullet, minnows, shrimp or crab chunks. 10-30# line and 1/2-4 oz splits shot or pyramid sinker. I usually have a lighter rod with 10-15# pound test that I throw into the breakers to get my fish for cut bait. Than a larger setup like a baitcaster or 4000-6000 spinner setup with 30# line to throw out to the big boys. Hope this helps.

I use 30# with the Catfish I go after. I might need to invest in a light spinning setup for the bait. Is there a few tackle shops around to get the bait from?
Ok… Additional info…
I have a Penn Fathom (25) on a 8’ rod with 30# mono, (2) Penn Defiance Combos (6’6") with 30# mono, and a Older Penn 209M 7’6" Tiger Rod with 30# mono. I plan on getting some surf rods. Can I use these rods and will the rods be Ok.
Throw the 8’. You’ll be fine with that. If you’re just going out there for fun, just throw shrimp out on a 2/0 hook. Adjust your weight according to how the water is moving. Carolina rig will work.
What beach do you plan to fish on?
Semper Fi
18’ Sterling
115 Yamaha
Big Ugly Homemade Blue Push Pole
I have a 3000 series penn 15# braid line, on a 6’6" ugly stick (bait rod)
And an Avet SX baitcaster 30# braid on a med/hvy 7’ ugly stick
You don’t really need huge gear to fish from the beach. Some like the “telephone poles” like a 12’-15’ poles. They aren’t really necessary. The will let you cast farther, but I have had great success on 7’-8’ rods. As far as bait, if you head out to Folly, Crosby’s is good. As far as Sullivan’s/Isle of Palms, Mt. Pleasent Seafood on Shem Creek is where I usually stop for bait.

When it gets closer I will check with them to see if they have Mullet and shrimp. Those sound like the best baits to have. I am looking for Kings and Bull Reds.
Reds are plentiful in the surf but the kings are a different story. Good luck with that one ! Your odds of a king from the beach are about the same as winning the lottery. Folly pier is your best bet for a king from land.
