surf fishing

Fished the surf a few times over the last couple days with no luck. when can i expect the fish to start biting in the surf? I’m happy with some spots and whiting but of course Reds would be great.

Just curious what the temps need to be before I spend anymore time out there with my feet in the sand. Thanks

You catch whiting and spots BUT…

You need to catch reds? Because…

The “big” Reds are not in the surf right now. They will come in the fall. Whiting are just now showing up in some numbers. Will be out this weekend. See reports at surf and pier.

Dear Travis…I would say you are just about on the money for time and water temp. right now. I look for 60 degree and rising water temps. to start to stir the pot. Big spotails run in the Fall and the Spring, and I would recommend a commitment to it ASAP. I prefer a sunrise low tide vs. a late afternoon low, but both are prime feeding times. Fresh bait is you’re best bet…mullet fillets/chunks…blue fish…blue crab, etc. Keep you filet knife sharp and handy…what comes in can go back out. Strong Moon phases will affect the fishing, and I hate a Northeast wind in the surf…it blows your bait down the beach. But I’m getting picky in my old age. Try to fish the cleaner water if you can…too many houses, people, cars, and boats ruin the surf zone IMHO, and expect the bite to turn on a couple to three hours into the flooding tide. Good luck.

Fresh cut mullet or live mud minnows/finger mullet are a very good choice for decent sized redfish. My biggest surf redfish (29" and 36") both came fishing in May.
