I’m headed to Charleston tonight for a birthday weekend of fishing with my resident fishing buddy. I am trying to decide between kayak fishing the rivers around John’s Island, kayak fishing the beach at Kiawah, or just surf/pier fishing. Any suggestions on what has been working for you locals? I typically fish for spottails, but honestly enjoy catching any fish that bites and puts on an exciting fight. We typically go out in kayaks around Limehouse landing (and once in Folly River), but have not had much success other than enjoying the day off. We fish soft plastics (paddletails and DOA shrimp) and generally use thawed shrimp on the bottom when surf fishing.
Inshore has been doing pretty good lately…I’d give the creeks and rivers a shot.
Inshore with artificials, and try LIVE bait outfishes frozen 99.9% of the time
Good deal. Thanks for the advice guys! I will try somewhere new in the kayak and report back.
Tried the reds out of Bulow landing on Saturday with no luck. The water was stained to the point that visibility was only 5-6" and seemed to be almost entirely fresh water (at least on top). Saw lots of baitfish on the banks, but had no luck pulling my gulp! mullet through the schools. Went to Folly beach and fished the surf on Sunday. Caught 9 whiting and 3 atlantic sharpnose between the two of us. The fish weren’t anything to brag about but they kept us entertained. Looking forward to my next visit! Next time, I will make sure that I have an extra can of sunscreen in the bag. (LEGS HURT SO BAD!!!) For now it’s back to my freshwater haunts and chasing those elusive largemouth and striper.
