Surf Reels

I need a surf reel but not sure what size/model to purchase. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Penn Spinfisher 7500 I will pair with a Penn 10 foot rod. Will use 20 pound test. Anything from a 5000 size reel to 7000 size reel would work.

I’m researching one as well. I’m looking at getting the Penn SSV 6500 LL or another Penn SSV 7500 with 20 lb mono or 30 lb braid. I’ve got the SSV 3500-7500 (except 6500. yet…) and am very pleased.

If you have to have a Penn…Get a Battle 7000 or 8000! You will not be disappointed. I have nothing nice to say about the SS or SSM reels (Quality). But after a year of HEAVY offshore use, the Battles are still in perfect shape with no corrosion or chips, and the drags are still slick.
My favorite spinning reels are my Shimano’s…(1) Stella 18000, (4) Spheros 14000FB’s* two with bearing and drag upgrades, (2) Stradic 8000’s, (2)Okuma spinners…don’t know the model#, but they were cheap ($58) and last but not least is an old Diawa BG, that I had the drag, and handle upgraded. All are in 100% condition and trust me, they have had a rough summer!

Paul- I’ll agree that the Battles are a quality reel for the price and I put mine through hell and back till it was time to upgrade. I recently chose the SSVs to replace mine with as there seems to be less plastic cosmetic pieces, the sealed body and they feel quality. I haven’t fished with Shimanos in years but have been impressed with the ones I’ve seen.

You wont be sorry with the Penn or the shimano. Just get what you can afford and fills your needs.

The reel you want should match the species you are targeting. Unless you want sharks or tarpon a 4000-6000 is the biggest you will need in carolina surf. For the tarpon and sharks an 8000 sized reel is a little more useful but not 100% necessary.
