I’m real interested into purchasing a decent surf rod/reel combo. Does anyone have any advice on where to get one, brand, and rod length? I’d like to keep the price in a reasonable range. I’ve looked on Bass Pro, Cabellas, ect., but until you physically see it and feel it, it’s not the same.
If they still carry them at Sports Authority, I love my Calypso Seahawk 9’ rods. As for a reel to go with it, I don’t like to spend too much money on a reel that is going to see lots of sand and saltwater on the beach, so I’d look for something affordable but not too flimsy.
Walmart usually has some good surf rods, but you might have to go to a few different locations to find something you like.
If you’re planning to go after big sharks, I’d PM stanjwarren. He seems to have all of that figured out, but he fishes with some pretty serious gear.

Is the Spinfisher 5000 a good size for surf, or is something larger better. What type/foot rod as well?
Really want to turn heads and cast far? I use an Alvey Pro Surf reel on a custom 14’ Alvey surf rod. Takes some practice, but worth it.
