I have an EZ loader trailer with drum brakes and surge actuator. I have noticed a clunking sound when I begin to move forward from a dead stop. It is not as noticeable when braking. Recently, I had to replace a brake shoe retainer pin that partially detached. The brakes appear to still be functioning appropriately, but that sound is hard to ignore. Can the surge actuator be adjusted? Thanks, Ben
This is the second trailer with surge brakes I have owned. I’m not aware of an adjustment for the surge actuator so I compensate for the clunk by taking off a little slower after a stop. And yes, the clunk is annoying.

All trailers with surge brakes will have that. The better they are bled and adjusted in the case of drum brakes the less clunk you will get because the tongue does not have to push in as far to actuate the brakes.
Oh yea, be sure to keep the fluid up to the proper level too.

bleeding should solve issue, also check brake lines/fittings for fluid leaks.

In addition to all the other suggestions, make sure you keep the actuator lubricated. It should have some grease fittings, but if your’s doesn’t you should be able to see the moving parts during a close inspection.

Okay after my smart remarks above. I did learn a trick on bleeding the brakes. Go by Lowes and get some clear tubing. Connect the clear tubing to the bleeding port and put the other end in a clear cup full of brake fluid. As you bleed the brakes the air will be forced into the cup and pull in brake fluid as you move the actuator back and forth. Just make sure you keep the master cylinder full of fluid at all times. Hope this helps if not revert to smart azz remark above and turn radio up!! Good luck.
