suz. 140hp

I have a Suzuki 140 4 stroke on a 22’ bayboat. Just bought this boat back in dec. I have been playing with it to get it ready for the up coming fishing season. Well today I let it go and ran for a few hours. At 5500 rpm I am running 33 - 35 no problems. Very smooth and comfortable. When I gas it up to full I run about 42 - 44. But the problem, or what seems like a problem is the rpms are running up over 6200. Little concerned. Doesn’t run bad at high speed. PLayed with the tilt trim and lift, but still high rpms. This is my first time owning a 4 stroke. My last three boats had Yamaha 2 strokes. and they never ran over 5200 rpm’s wide open. What’s everyone’s thoughts. thanks

prop pitch too low? I would see what prop size and pitch I had and use that as a starting point.

how do you tell the prop size? It doesn’t appear to be stamped into it?

It is usally stamped or raised on the outside of the barrel, the surface that the prop nut hits or the surface that the thrust washer hits, one of the three. No marks anywhere you could take it to skips on cross county and he can tell you.

definatly go to a bigger prop. suzuki four stroke have a lot of torque and the rev limiter is at 6400.

if that was what it was turning with just you in it and a light load, you’ve got it proped perfect, don’t change anything

what spareparts said …6200 is WOT if you had a light load it’s correct a good cruising rpm is 4400-4600 don’t run WOT everyere. I have had 3 of the 140’s they are excellant motors…

Glassman, that engine is designed to run up to 6200 rpm’s. If you were running higher rpm’s than that the first thing that would happen is your rev limiter would kick in. You would know this because it would make your engine skip and a red light would come on the rpm guage. Also you will turn highr rpm’s in the winter than the summer so it sounds to me your just right.I suppose you bought this boat form an individual because if you bought it from a dealer he did not do a very good job when he deliverd your boat to you. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys, I will leave well enough alone. I normally run 3/4 throttle any way. Saves gas and easier to handle. But nice to know if a storm pops up or something happens I can hammer down and not have to worry about blowing up.

dont change anything
