Suzuki motors

Outstanding engines. Been running various models for about 5 yrs. Love them. Reliable, fast, quiet, timing chain instead of a timing belt so you don’t have to service the chain, etc… I have run the 200, 225, 250, 300 and now the new 350. I was in a buddies blue wave 2000 bay with a zuke 140 just the other day and it was a great engine. Powerful lil sucker! There is a reason you see more and more people running these engines. Professional fisherman, commercial fisherman, family boaters, etc…

that’s pretty funny, “5 years”

the Suzuki 140 is the weakest motor in that class, it produces less than 130 hp at the prop.

pull a 10-15 year old saltwater used suzuki motor apart and get back to me.

in this market Yamaha has 72% of the market share of all new motors sold in the past 6-8 years.
Nationally, Yamaha has 40% market share, and Mercury has 40% market share.
that means Suzuki, Honda, and Etec share the remaining 20%

I am a dealer for Yamaha and Honda. Honda has major corrosion issues as well, but at least they will stand behind their product.

I use to do warranty work on Suzuki’s. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with to stand behind their product.

Suzuki explicitly excludes corrosion from their warranty. They do not cover any corrosion issues, even on a motor that is less than 30 days old.

Suzuki’s extended warranty is not through Suzuki, its an insurance plan, and will never pay more in warranty claims than the original cost of the motor, so PLEASE, tell me more about how great Suzuki is, and I will be happy to give you many first hand examples of how Suzuki has walked away leaving their customer hanging in the wind.

Go Boldly

I would never buy a Suzuki based on what I have been told by Suzuki owners. There is a distinct reason why Suzuki has a small share of the US OB market.

Stella Blue

My DF140 is the best piece of machinery I’ve ever owned. It powers my 19’ CC Cat and runs 40mph all day long. Only issues I’ve had were self inflicted, bad fuel last year and overfilling it with oil once. So in 18 yrs it’s been so freekin reliable it scares me. I’d buy Suzuki again forever albeit my DF140 appears to be indestructible. The newer ones are even better, the fuel components are much easier to service if, like me, you get trash in the gas. Don’t buy an ETEC used… some are really bad. Chris V may have seen some issues on Suzuki as a company, I have not but have heard the same. You just need a decent Suzuki certified mechanic and you’ll be fine.

I have no problem with what I am about to say.
If Suzuki could get their customer support and corrosion issues under control, Suzuki could dominate the outboard market.
the timing chain design is much more reliable than a timing belt.
the offset driveshafts allow better weigh distribution on the transom, and removable lower cowling makes repairs SOOO much easier.
If you are gonna use the motor exclusively in FRESH water, the inline Suzuki’s are one of the best motors around, as long as you don’t need factory support.
The v-6 models are just like Honda, they are adapted car motor designs, and have some issues with injector location, and ease of maintenance, but they are still good motors in freshwater. in saltwater, they are just not long term reliable.

THEY EXCLUDE CORROSION FROM THE WARRANTY
why do you think that is???
no one else that I am aware of does that.

“removable lower cowling makes repairs SOOO much easier.”

I got a 250 4stoke and I found the cowling a nice touch. The corrosion issue is a pia…and the use of dissimilar metals like the inspection plug just makes it worse.
You’re an honest mechanic/person in a BS world. Your free advice is priceless.

I rebuilt my buddys 90hp and as you state the corrosion between the head and block is a big problem. I wonder if it is the head gasket material.

Mechanic told me yesterday that they sell them but absolutely worst support of anyone else. Won’t even return calls. What he sez…
