Swapping Flip-Flop Cooler seat for Leaning Post

Im about to buy a leaning post and swap out my cooler seat. Anyone had experience or advice to pass along for the DIY’er?

No advice, but it was one of the best things I did. Missed the storage though.

Did that years ago and the best mod I ever made. Mine were captains chairs. Drill out existing screws if they won’t come out or you can’t access behind. For install use stainless toggle bolts. It’s an easy project. Good luck and post pics

Best boat upgrade I have made … Don’t forget to lube bolts … stainless on stainless will bind

If you haven’t bought it yet, I have a leaning post with a bait tank on a pallet in my yard. I would like to get rid of it. Emphasis on “get rid of it”.

The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.

What is 5200? I am sure it is a dumb question but I don’t know what it is.

Tell me about it… plastic or aluminum? Pics? I want one for my dual console and any typical one will be too big. I’m willing to modify if possible.

Did it last year. I had some plates made and welded to the legs so that the cooler seat holes would be covered by the new mounting plates. Looks great. Had some launchers mounted on it as well. Love it. Sold my seat for $275. Overall, came out pretty good.

Thanks guys. I actually ordered it last night. Hopefully the cooler seat will come out easily…

3M 5200 Marine Sealant. It’s a super strong marine grade caulk used to seal spots where you don’t want water to leak in. Under mounting pads, in holes when through bolting or putting screws in, especially under the water line. Much better than silicone caulk, and it will cure under water. It does take about 72 hrs to fully cure. 3M also make 4200 fast cure sealant, but you gotta work fast with it. It starts to skin up pretty quick, so clean-up can be a pain sometimes. I prefer the longer cure 5200.

Just did the same thing. Had to cut the cooler seat bolts out with a sawzall. Then filled the holes with MarineTex. Then used 5200 under the pads and bolted the leaning post in. Works GREAT!!! Love it!!!

I want to do it on my 22ft skiff but that’s the only dry storage. Ughhh

many of the leaning posts have storage built in to them, with room for a cooler underneath
best of both worlds

My leaning post had a bait tank, which I needed more than storage. It had the little pocket storage under the rod holders accessed from the back.

Citadel, what are you going to do with the cooler seat? I may be interested if you are selling it.

I just removed the cooler seat today. Came out perfectly. It was just screwed in; thank god. Froggyo, I was planning on putting it on Craigslist or something. I would love to sell it. I can upload some pics if you are interested.
