Well I’ve personally seen about a 10’ Lemon feasting on a man. Had to shoot it to make it stop. ME…I’m not getting in that ocean voluntarily for any reason!! That goes for surf, offshore, or anywhere else. Used to dive, but never in saltwater. Think that crap traumatized me.

I’ve seen lightning strike several people, me included, but I still go outside. Seen car wrecks do awful things, but I still drive a truck. Seen fireplaces burn down houses, but I still build fires in mine. Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances

Some things you have to do…others not so much.

I pretty much jump in offshore without even thinking about it. I do have a tendency to never lower my feet completely…they gon’ get my toes!

Well good luck last time I went reef fishing out at Charleston 60 there was a very large shark was circling our boat for about 15 minutes. Actually we see them all the time when we go offshore… ill go swimming, but not out there!

I think Cracker may be the only one with any sense but y’all make me laugh! You only go around once in life, go for it! Don’t jump in the water when a known man eater is swimming around the boat. And don’t dive with bait attached to your person. Common sense! If you lack it I can’t teach it.
Been on many a swim call off a Naval Vessel, never had an incident!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

BC, you and Larry make good points, The original question in this thread was would you get in the water with a “hooked fish” for the purpose of video footage of the landing and subsequent fight.
I respect your opinion since you, Rob, and Jordan probably log more dive time than most of the rest of us combined. I personally don’t want to be in the water with a hooked marlin, mahi, wahoo, or anything big enough to strip line at will. Would you do it?
For me it’s not just about the sharks, but I’ve seen sharks attack plenty of big fish right at the gaff and don’t want to be in the water when a nice tiger is fired up.

ive taken the plunge before and its well worth it (rope ladder over the side to climb back up). sounds obvious but know you can swim before jumping in X hundred or thousand feet of water and i wouldnt jump in while you have a hooked fish or if you can see a big shark around. theres plenty of us that have pulled in half a fish before!

Video get’s interesting at the 29 second mark… What do you think was going through the Mako’s mind?

That was truly an Oh Sh*t moment.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.

Notice though that no divers were eaten in the shooting of that video :sunglasses: And I think that was a striped marlin, not a blue, but I’ve been wrong before.

Sharks live in the ocean and so do we. Jumping in the ocean with sharks is safer than walking around downtown Savannah after dark, but I don’t lock myself in the house. I’ll take those ocean sharks over the downtown sharks any day. Either way, I get in the water and I’ll go when the Lord takes me. I consider every day I lived past 21 free anyway.

While that is true, it's probably good that the mako was paying attention... I don't think he would come in that fast unless he initially thought that diver was food. I think he realized at the last moment that the diver was not food and veered off...

You are probably right. It’s probably more dangerous to walk down the streets of Savannah…

Exactly,
I dive every chance I get and 99% of the time it’s in the ocean, I don’t frequent 5 points in Columbia for the same reason you guys don’t like walking downtown Savannah.

I’m not getting in the water with a fish on the line.

Last May, myself, John and Jake Abatte were trolling a weed line in 700’. Putting the finishing touches on a real good box of dolphin when a 8’ Tiger shows up. Jake is fighting a pretty good bull and the Tiger is riding along in the prop wash just enjoying the show. When the bull is almost in range of the gaff, he lights up like flipping a switch and the tiger hit him almost instantly.
No way I’m getting in while a fish is being fought.

I’ll hop in if it gets too hot. You cant live your life in a cage. But I do take some precautions. I make sure I don’t have fish oil all over my hands, I don’t jump out were I have been fishing, and make sure your chum bag is put away. I just swim around for a few minutes to cool off. Downing a few beers helps calm the nerves the first few times.

Me and my diver buds swam off the coast a lot between dives. On calm days hammerheads would cruise by without any issue. We filmed some great dolphin swimming with us and I’d HIGHLY recommend if you can you should jump in with them, they love it as did we and the vids we took are awesome! Never had a shark issue, but we never EVER would get out of the boat if there was a tiger or great white shark nearby, that would be pretty dumb. Also, shooting cobia or such with a speargun on a swim… you better have it tied back into the boat!

Kinda like jumping out of planes…if the plane aint broke, I aint gettin out…just sayin

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

Only people that have never jumped out of a plane say that. Most jump aircraft seems to be held together with duct tape and bailing wire. You were actually safer jumping sometimes.

Very true of some jump planes I’ve been in. I remember my first instructor telling us "you ask why we jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Well let me assure you that this airplane is not perfectly safe and you’re better off jumping out than landing in it
