Swordfishing- first try

Had always wanted to try it so decided to take advantage of two days of perfect weather and give it a go. 21 yo son was still in town before college and manged to get a couple of buddies to take friday off. One guy had lived in S Fla so had done a good bigt of this type of fishing. Started preparing at 9am. Had to go to charleston for squid and supplies. Guys at Haddrells are great btw. Will be nice having a place like that close by. Spent the afternoon rigging baits shopping and packing ice and food. It was more work than anticipated getting everything ready to go. My buddy coming from asheville was scheduled for an on time 6pm arrival- to charleston. once informed he was in fact coming to edisto he had to turn around and go back up I26 to 95. We crank up the generator and it willl not run after having run perfectly earlier in the day. Not a good start. Checked a few thingsnd then decided, we will manage without. Crew arrived at 7 and we were off with 350 gal fuel, 20 gal fresh water, 200# ice, 15 giant squid, beers, case bottled water, sandwiches, biscuits, fried chicken, and a key lime pie crew insisted on bringing.

Ride out was spectalar. Put the hump into the plottter- 82 miles- turned on auto pilot and kicked back. Watch a spectacular sunset off the stern. Due to later start did the last half in the dark. Actually saw a couple of boats on the way out bottom fishing overnight. Arrived at the spot at 10 pm and put lines in. I was putting a line down about 30 min later and the line goes slack, i tighten up and we are hooked up. drag screams out, i put on the harness and the fight is on. we were convinced it was a sword fish. fought for 20 min and then saw it was a 7ft shark. cut him off and put lines back in. decided to try the generator one more time and it cranked right up and ran perfectly for the next 10 hours. cranked up the ac in the cabin. had another fish take and brought in a 6 ft hammerhead. Decided to head northeast and try a different area with fewer sharks. ran about 10 miles and put lines

Great report. Had a very similar experience last year about the same time of year. I am also looking forward to better trolling action. If you ever need a buddy boat on an overnighter, keep me in mind. I run a 32 Albemarle.

Thank you for the report; very informative and detailed. Sorry you didn’t get a sword, but remember its a numbers game. Next time.

Kudos for giving it a go.

Don’t feel bad about the trolling. Trolled all day from ledge to 100 fathom curve and back and only had 5 knock-downs. 2 of which were kings, 1 lost wahoo, 1 lost dolphin and a mystery knock down on long center. Also a lazy follow on a marlin lure from a sail. Huge difference from 2 weeks ago. Water has come up 5-6 degrees. Not much life anywhere. We were trying to radio you yesterday, but you guys must have been too far North. Glad you made it back safely.

GOOD JOB! ALWAYS WANTED TO TRY A SWORD TRIP

Thanks,

Awesome report. Thanks for sharing.

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

Yeah Raddaddy we hailed y’all a bunch of times. Heard y’all once but didn’t get a reply. Need to check my VHF. Glad y’all had a little action at least.

Thanks for the report!

The idea of an overnight trip intrigues me. It also intimidates me somewhat…that’s why I’d prefer to have a buddy boat. It’ll happen one day…I will look forward to it. Sounds like you had fun even if you didn’t bring a sword home.

“Never argue with an idiot…he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”

Good job on giving it a shot. We tried it once last year and came up short also. You are right about being out there under the stars and the light breeze, nothing like it. Glad it was a safe trip. You are constantly thinking what if this happens, what if that happens, so it definitely helps to have a good, optimistic crew.
