Left out Friday morning headed to fish the lower Saluda. Decided not to and picked a place I’ve never been or heard of Sylva being the choice. Stopped at Hookers fly shop and got the scoop. Fished the Tuckasegee yesterday afternoon with 12 to 14s with not a single bite. Grabbed a hotel and hit the water after breakfast with 16-18 pheasant tails and wore them out. 12 in the net with about the same amount at the net that didn’t make it in. All decent size bows. Packed up at 4 and talked to a fellow angler about different memories and experiences(Dale Collins) before heading back to charleston which I just arrived. Best spur of the moment trip I’ve taken yet.
Bulldog, we will have to plan a weekend up that way, how was the water … high or low. You should of fished some Nymph Droppers with some eggs … you know those stockers love the neon eggs haha. We should hit up the Davidson one weekend, alot of native trout and more difficult to catch. I can probably arrange a place for us to stay.
experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s
the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation
that thing you get just moments after you needed it.
Smokey if you go to the Davidson you better bring your own rock to stand on from home. I quit fishing up there years ago because of all the people that have started fishing it. There are a lot of people that dont even thing about stepping into the river 10 yds in front of you and start fishing the same pool or run you are. If you head that way have fun and try to ge as far from the hatchery as you can
The Tuck is a fun river to fish. Heading up in a couple of weeks but most likely will not be fishing during this trip due to the people going with us having no interest.
If have a second vehicle, leave one at Turkey Pen Gap.Then drive up to Pink Beds, hike down to the Mills River. You will have 12 miles of river to fish, beautiful water!
Turkey Pen Gap Road = very narrow, tough place to turn around if you have oncoming traffic and rutted, washed out, rocky, you will probably need a 4x4 in some spots, at least that’s the way it was the last time I was there(year ago). It could have been regraded by now, still worth a look. That being said, it’s a great area to fish! Tip in the very deep holes, dredge a fuzzy, leggy, sculpin pattern (rust or green color) through them a few times. PSLast time at the Pink Beds trail the beavers had built a few dams that caused some flooding but those flooded pond areas hold some nice browns.
I fish the tuck and guide on the tuck a good bit, if any of you boys head up here let me know and I can maybe give you some help, and point you in some other directions. I’d skip the Davidson unless you can make it on the water super early and on weekdays. There’s reasons why its a TU tp 100 stream but solitude aint one of em!
Fritz I have the same problem with the people I’m friends with. If it isn’t with a spin reel they don’t wanna do it. Heading up to Bryso City next week for a guys weekend but I’m taking the equipment to make time to fish

Going up with 10 people and none of them have the first bit of interest. I even have waders and equipment for 2 extra people and they still say it will be to cold to get in the water.
The nantahala river is also a great choice when in the mountains of NC. I am from Sylva and if I return I skip the Tuck even though its in my back yard. The Upper Nantahala is usually great fishing, its a smaller creek and lends itself well to nymphing but holds some great fish. The Davidson is slammed full and no fun in my opinion, to many other folks hunting the same fish you are. Check out the Little river near Hooker falls as well in Hendersonville/Flat Rock area. We are heading to North Georgia in two days for a week so I hope to be able to post some good pics.
