Tackle Bags?

I am going through too many of these zippered tackle bags. I am always spraying WD-40 or something to get the zippers to work when they are around salt water. They don’t have to even be immersed to have them freeze up. I have decided just to put my gear in those clear organizer boxes and then carry them all in a milk crate on the boat. Any body else have a solution?

Vaseline is your friend

I saw this product advertised on “Ship Shape” just for that purpose but haven’t tried it yet.

Looks like a tube of chap-stick.

Looks to be readily available or order off the internet.

I need to try those, I paid a bit of bucks on my bags and would like to keep using them if possible.
Thanks

The zipper deal sucks. You would think they could figure out a velcro solution. I guess it’s because all of those Chinese factories have paid for the tooling to make the zipper bags. I’m done with them also.

Yeah, at first glance you think they are a great deal. And everyone is making and selling them, but they are totally wrong for salt water.

I just rub a tube of old chapstick all over/in the zippers, and it seems to help a lot. I also buy the cheap small Okeechobee bags so it’s no sweat replacing them if they do go bad (though I haven’t had to yet). Keeping the bag in a hatch on the boat helps a lot too.

Use dielectric (sp?) grease. It stands up to the heat of summer better. Vaseline, lip balm, etc. melt too easily in the heat and just run off. Auto parts stores (Auto Zone, etc) typically have small single-use packs at the check out counter (for electrical connections).

Thanks DownLow I will look for some of that.

I bet a couple drops of Woody Wax would work. That stuff is incredible for a corrosion inhibiting lubricant. I wouldn’t put it on a clothes zipper, but I would on a tackle bag.

pretty good stuff

Motorcycle chain wax (grease) in the spray can, works well and lasts, i went through 2 cans wd40 before i tried it :dizzy_face::dizzy_face:

WD 40 is not a good lube. It’s fine for use as a penetrating oil however, but I wouldn’t use it on a zipper.

I remember my one grandmother, who was a seamstress by trade, & who passed away back in '73, using a small wax cake on various zippers when I was a kid. Back then zippers were primarily made of metal & tackle bags didn’t really exist. Most folks had tackle boxes back then.

I have two bags: one small, inexpensive soft-sided tackle bag that I carry on the boat, and a medium sized backpack that stays at home, or sometimes in the truck. The backpack is for surplus tackle and stuff I don’t use every trip. In the small tackle bag, I carry:

  • two of the clear plastic tackle organizers (roughly 4" x 10") for a few hard lures, topwaters, spoons, etc.
  • two small plastic organizers (roughly 3" x 4") filled with an assortment of hooks, small lead, jigheads, swivels, etc.
  • Several pkgs of soft plastics
  • One sealed container of assorted Gulp baits
  • De hooker, pliers, tackle knife, 15# and 25# flouro leader material
  • Small first aid kit for minor cuts, burns, pain (I make my own)
  • Fishing license, boat registration, etc.
The idea is to travel light but have everything I need for that day's fishing. 2-3 times per year or when it gets soaked, I empty the small bag and wash it (I put mine in the washing machine). Then I oil the zippers, refill it and I'm ready to go again. I don't like the idea of taking a ton of tackle that I won't use that day that a) takes up space, and b) possibly gets wet and needs cleaning and drying. NOTE: I only have inshore tackle. Offshore would obviously be a different story.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

I experienced the same with my bags until I bought a blacktip bag from west marine. The zipper is very large and it is plastic. The flaps over the zipper are also magnetic. It was fairly expensive but I’m going on season 3 with it.

I bounced around from bag to bag for 6 years or so, finally going back to a Plano guide box that holds 4 3700 trays.I spary it off with the boat. My buddy has a bag that holds like 12. No one needs 12 3700 trays.

I got a shimano baltica tackle bag last year and it has held up well. Plastic zipper is the key. Plano also has a softsider bag with no zipper, just a plastic buckle to secure the top. It holds a few plano boxes.

i’ve got a bag with no zipper for the main compartment. There’s only one little side pocket on the outside that has a zipper
The rest of the zippers are internal.
