Tackle/Rigging advice

Can someone point me to a link/thread or provide information about how to rig for various fishing types around here?

Say if I am fishing for flounder, red, trout, sheepshead, or another fish if you think its worth the time.

Just trying to make a list of tackle to buy so I can effectively fish for the critters here and any advice is appeciated. Right now I have one 7ft rod with 12lb test on it (el cheapo Shakespeare model from walmart) and have just been throwing out gulp shrimp or tails on a jig head. Hasnt bothered me so far because im getting use to the kayak and just enjoying being on the water, but Im ready to get serious about the fishing part.

So, tackle advice with pictures if possible (ie i know there are links out there that show various rigs).

Much appreciation

Search the inshore discussion forum. Lot’s of good info there last summer when people were fishing instead of internet drama.

Flounder - I like a long narrow trolling sinker with about 18 inch leader and a 1/0 circle hook. Finger mullet or mud minnows dragged slowly anong the bottom.

Trout - I like either shrimp or finger mullet under a popping cork 1/0 hook

Reds - bait on the bottom. finger mullet, cut mullete, piece of crab, etc. 1/0 to 3/0 hook depending on fish size.

Sheeps - there was a better tutorial a couple of months ago than I could ever write.

Also try “basic useful rigs” link below.

I keep my gear simple. Tie leaders at home in advance and keep them in ziplock bags. Carry a couple of extra weights and hooks and thats about it.
weights usually 1 or 2 oz
hooks 1/0 - 3/0 almost always circle hooks
bait bucket and cast net

Too,

Great advice. I hope we can fish together sometime, think I could learn a lot from you.

Re cast net. You use that to grab bait? Do you try to cast from you’re kayak or do you find a likely looking spot and get out and stand? I use to be able to throw a cast net pretty well but would take a lot of practice (with me getting wet) to get the balance from the Revo on a toss.

Also do you normally go out with 2 rods? one rigged for cork and one for troll/casting? And 12#? 20#? What is you’re general purpose test?

I take 2 spinning rods. 12# test, but I’m thinking of switching to 20 or 30# braid because I had a NICE red cut me off on an oyster bar last week.
I have both rods with end loops tied on the mono, so I can change quickly. I have one rigged for bait…A Carolina rig with a trolling sinker. The other with a topwater plug or jig when I set out. I like to drag a topwater plug whenever I’m paddling from place to place.

cast net is a small 4 footer, so I can throw it from the yak. Most of the time I’ll get bait right before I launch though.

There are some amazing fisherment on this site… I’m not one of 'em, but I try whenever time allows.

Thanks again, good advice to start with even if you think you’re not great it gives me a great starting point.

In-Laws in town this week so Yak’n time might be limited, good week to stock up on gear needed without going overboard.

Right now im looking at grabbing a second cheapo Shakespeare, some tackle to do rigs, and a softsided cooler that fits the back of my Yak for storing anything that legal size and looks like it would grill well.

oh, and gonna order the eagle cuda 250 and a 12v battery, seems like a great combination and the gps will help me when im navigationally challenged (not to mention marking good holes and spots)
