Caught 2 26" reds today, and had a bigger one break me off. Fish were getting in very shallow water (4-6") with their backs showing. Dupre spoon fly, one hour before an 8.1 high tide, overcast. N wind at 5-10.
I’ve noticed that the last 4 times I’ve waded the flats after a rainstorm the fish seem to be plentiful and hungry. I guess the rain cools the water off. Even if it’s a little muddy, they seem to have no problem seeing the spoon fly.
I have had nothing but trouble wiht them seeing a spoon fly… they follow it and look at where is is but don;t eat… I move it and they rush at it but stop when it settles… do you keep it moving or let it sit?

Had a phenomenal day today as well! Went out and saw over 20 fish…landed 5, broke off 2 and of course spooked a crap ton!
Its always been my experience, that after the rain storm or during is always great fishing! To me, the rain makes the ground wet, which brings out tons of fiddlers, got good cloud coverage…and yes, they like to eat!, plus it doesn’t hurt its late September
Today I hammered them on spoon flies as well! My best days have always been right after a rain storm, or like I said…in the middle of one (as long as there is no lightning)

Yep, don’t let it settle. Reds seem to rush spoons. Hit it like a train wreck. Maybe it’s why many (including me) like to throw the more subtle flies. But, I still think a spoon is a “real” fly. To me, it represents (or mimics) a large fish scale. What could be more natural?
nikon- I keep them moving erratically without letting them come to a complete stop or drop to the bottom. You have to be particularly careful not to retrieve the spoon right at them. Even if they’re standing on their heads eating fiddlers, they always seem to want a spoon fly. Tie it on with a loop knot to get a little extra wobble. tight lines
because they rush it like that, they are almost always hooked in the corner of the mouth. with crab flies, they seem to have the hook deeper in their mouth, which is worse for the fish, and more likely to result in a breakoff, IMO
Caught two last night after the rain myself…on the spoon and probably could have caught a couple more but my friend’s wife is expecting and that could have been his last trip. Had to help my bro out. When I fish the spoon, I fish it with short, medium strips. They definitely bit and fought harder last night. Maybe I’ll be able to hit it again today but I need more water!
Went again tonite after (and during) the rain. Saw probably 10 fish, most in pretty thick grass. Caught 2 hogs- 27" and 33".
I’d like to see a pic of the 33 incher.
