Tailing Reds

Looking at the tide predictions for next weekend, it looks like the tides will be high enough to get up on the flats and pole for reds. Since I haven’t owned a flats boat for long, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on successful spinning reel tactics/lures as well as good fly colors/styles to use on the flats.

Also I know many people do not want to share their fishing spots, but if anyone could tell me some areas where the redfish tail it would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve seen them tailing in every river around. Some flats are of course better than others. Spend some time scouting and you’ll find them.

Just get a Stradic like every other inshore fisherman within 50 miles of the coast. lol

No matter how many variables I have control over, I never expect a bite. I only hope.

Colors/lures are not as important as presentation and ability to be weedless.
Then, Leading the fish and knowing where your lure/fly is absolutely critical.
For spinning, Try scented gulps and if you get it close to the red, but not sure, just let it sit. If things line up for you, you’ll feel a tap tap. Be sure not to yank it out though.

For flies, adjust to water clarity. Brighter as water is murkier. Just need to ensure they see it in the water column.

For lures with the spinning tackle, a weedless spoon is a good choice. Depending on the conditions, gold, copper, black nickel or chartreuse might be good. As has been said, bright in murky water. 1/4 or 3/16 oz should be fine, lighter might be better, but harder to cast. I like the Johnson’s Silver Minnow spoons, but the hooks need to be sharpened. Also like the Nemires.

I posted these flies awhile back. Anything similar will work. There’s some trout flies in these posts as well. Use at least an 8 wt rod.

What do y’all think about the heat? I feel like I haven’t seen as many tails on the flats recently, but I’m not sure if it’s because of the heat or the wind (or some other factor).

I’ve been going in the afternoons, so it’s been hotter and windier… that’s about all I can think of that might cause the tailing to slow down. Any experience with this?
