Certainly not what I expected to see as I pushed across a high tide flat in my kayak. Saw 3 to 4 tailing sheepshead in about 6 inches of water on the incoming tide. The plan for the afternoon was to try and coax some reds into some topwater action, so when saw the tailing sheepshead I tossed out my chartreuse gurgler and stripped it across his nose. It was a subtle take and a quick fight on the 8 wt.
It was my first sheepshead on any type of gear, so it made for a good afternoon.
I’ve seen sheeps in a few flats that I pole around in and no matter what kind of pattern is thrown at them they always seem to just ignore it. I know they look straight at it they just never seem interested. they are stubborn fish. Great catch

Ha Ha.
It was only a matter of time before a forum naysayer chimed in. I fully concede that ?luck? was the catalyst in this fish being caught on a top water fly, but if luck never played a role in fishing then we would all have a few less successful days on the water. And as unlikely as it may appear to be, I assure you there are no shenanigans going on here.
Don’t get your manties all in a wad, Nancy. I was not calling your integrity into question, but merely stating that prison permit eating gurglers is a rarely seen thing.
It is a mischevious sheepshead, indeed, who will slurp down a topwater when most are nonplussed by any fly or presentation.
A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.
Nancy*… That’s rich.
How foolish it was for me to assume that your declaration of “shenanigans” was directed at the method in which he was caught and/or the corresponding post and not the the fish’s behavior. Considering the definition of the word shenanigans is “a devious trick used especially for an underhand purpose”, I suppose it was the sheepshead’s integrity that had been called into question. Lol, duly noted.
Having said that, I do appreciate the friendly bantering as the fly fishing forum has been a bit bland lately.
