its been a bit since ive been able to do the shad run but should be able to make it back and paddle my way up again this year. i remember catching a few blues on pieces of herring, but never in any large numbers. if anyone with experience doesnt mind sharing…do chunks of herring work better or should i drop a live herring down? im also considering dropping a whole live shad on my drift back just to see if i can get a monster. any help is always appreciated.
Still at least a month away from the run beginning. Can’t wait. I’ve never catfished up there.

We always had good luck on using very small 3-5 inch stump knockers. Just bump the bottom as you drift down. If you are looking for catfish I can tell you some other (better) places to drift, pm me.
ill probably drive up sometime around march as im now a few hours south of charleston and after i hear some reliable reports from others. ive never tried for stump knockers in the tailrace at all just shad, herring, and catfish…do they hang out in the brush piles along the side and easy to catch with the typical bream baits if theyre better than herring? still curious to hear thoughts on using a whole, live shad for bait.
the state record blue( and world record at the time) was caught right at the line where everyone fishes for shad. it was caught on a small live herring.
ill probably turn every single head fighting something like that from a yak should i hook up! ive reeled in bigger off the beach in north florida but always a blast to take the sleigh ride!
