tailrace stripers?

before i leave charleston catching a striper is definately on my to do list. as always dont want anyone posting their favorite holes for the thread stalkers to crowd but is there much chance 1 or 2 could be picked up by casting jigs, drifting a herring, or trolling a spoon/plug?

Not sure about the tailrace there, but the urge to spawn should be kicking in soon. So they should stack up at the tailrace as they try to head up to spawn. I know a lot of them head up here to columbia and spawn in the Congaree and move to the Saluda for the summer.

They stack up in front of the dam on the tail race canal side in June. We are no longer allowed to fish for stripers down here after May 31st…until October 1st. Went to a striper fishing seminar for tactics for catching them in the Cooper River. The man said the Striper hang out around deep curves and around bridge pilings with swift current. Target them with bucktails or herring.

guess i cant get one if i dont try. i have a portable fish finder i used for ice fishing at home that works from my kayak to find deep holes. i guess once i get done with shad i can drop a rod with herring and cast a jig on the other, however knowing my luck ill probably latch on to a big catfish with the herring and make for a very interesting fight from a yak but hey if it pulls me the right way thats that much less i have to paddle back to the ramp!

Cats tend to head upstream when hooked. If he’s smart he’ll tow you toward the actual tailraces next to the dam and have you join him in the water.
