talk me out of it.....

1.Got an old dependable boat close to the shrimp grounds…
2.Small investment.
3.Plenty of young strong help.
4.Lots of good memories when I pulled with my pop.

Why would I be nuts to pull a small trawl net 3-4 times a year?

I think its gonna be one giant Party when diesel gets to 2.50 a gallon…go for it.

Well you will need a commercial license and a trawler license $150.

This will make your boat a commercial vessel and you a commercial captain.

Among other things
1.You will no longer have the right to possess a shrimp baiting license.
2. Your vessel will then need a general NPEDS discharge permit from EPA. You will be required to accept terms and conditions and self inspect your boat quarterly for compliance. permit good for 5 years record of inspections must be on board at all times. Vessels under 79 feet used to be exempt but no longer.
3. Nets over 12 wide need a certified TED.
4. You will need all the safety gear required for a commercial vessel including but not limited to: the most expensive items, a regularly certified and inspected life raft and depending on the season survival suits. see coast guard for list, its long.
5. Not sure but you may also may need turtle resuscitation devices on board and a training certificate.
Good luck

Getting things together as we speak.

It’s crazy how many smaller shrimp guys you see down in the gulf.

Yes, what Ricky said…

Got to old to throw the net and went the trawl way last year, and wont ever throw on bait again! You can set and handle a 25’ net easly with 2 men over 65, Have seen many shrimping alone but I dont recomend it! With no machenical devises you can pull a net with out TEDs

Jus sayin

I quit with it a few years ago, old man got too old and the boat did too. It was a lot of work, especially if you weren’t catching anything. Also, you’ll be real glad when the last shrimp from 5 150qt coolers gets headed!

If anyone tells you its easier or cheaper than baiting, they’re lying to try to sell their equipment. Ask me how I know…

Is this info correct for your situation?
I’m not distrusting the info just wonder if this applied to everyone pulling a net?

Cape,
I’ve got a friend in NC that’s asked me to consider doing it also and would like to give it a try, he has a net to use on my boat. I guess I need to check the reg’s and see what is required. Let me do some research and we’ll compare notes.
Jeff

Either of you guys considered this further?

I can remember an episode of Swamp People a few years ago! Joe and his stepson went out on a small river and pulled nets and caught a ton of shrimp! Why would you need TED’s for inland waters. They didn’t have a real big boat either!

I gave up the idea more or less due to lack of time…Buddies are ready to invest w help n money but work and offshore trips make it nearly impossible.

Wuss.
