I’m considering a Carolina Skiff JV15 tiller.
What to power it with?
A Yammy 25hp 2 stroke was recommended.
I have a Yammy 2 stroke 115 on my SeaPro 18ft now, and was wanting a 4 stroke for all future boats (fuel efficient, quiet, no premix, etc)
I know they are heavier and more $, but what are the other pros/cons.
I was advised that a 25 4stroke is not a good replacement for a 25 2stroke.
Thanks in advance for your experience/opinions!
the 4 stroke WILL be heavier and cost more but it will use less fuel. I’d much rather have the 2 stroke though as you’ll save on weight and they’re cheaper. Plus you’ll move a good bit faster.
Every piece of tail you turn down is a piece of tail you didn’t get.
had a buddy follow me and my hunting partner to a duck hunting spot.(thats me and my partner in my boat with a 25 2stroke merc, heavy blind, 85lb dog, 36 dekes, guns, etc.) he had a brand new rig. jon with a new 25hp 4 stroke yammy, no blind, by himself, 12 dekes, no dog. we actually had to slow down and wait on him 3 times. i was very unimpressed, and so was he.
I’d much rather have a 4 stroke. Agree that it won’t be quiet as fast out of the hole and it’s slightly heavier, but long term you’ll never regret the 4 stroke. I have a j16 and I’ve had both 2 stroke and 4 stroke tillers on it.
My buddy had a smaller zuki 4S and that was a really tough motor to cold start. If I was going to get a smaller 4S I would make sure that it had an electric start.

Popcorn is on me. I will tell you about a neat little trick to do with the popcorn bucket Ricky. Bring a knife to make the hole.
well, its not really an issue anymore, unless you buy used or left over. all the new small motors are 4 stroke, except ETEC
tohatsu makes the small mercury motors now
yamaha went all 4 stroke for 2010
honda and suzuki have been 4 stroke
on a skiff, the 25 four stroke will perform just fine.
stretch here on cf.com has a 16 skiff with a yamaha 4 stroke, and runs fine, with a load

SeaPro 180CC
Two strokes offwer better horsepower to weight and are somewhat smaller than an equal horsepower 4 stroke. Phasing out of 2 stroke engines has already begun and new ones will not be available much longer. Environmental concerns are dictating the end of engines that put oil in the water. Personally I wouldn't have anything but a 4 stroke on a heavy offshore boat but would be OK with a 2 stroke on a light inshore boat.

I’ve driven it and it would be much faster and handle better (in my opinion) with a 2 stroke. I’d compare it to running with a 15 horse 2 stroke on a similar bote.
snazzy little skiff nonetheless

Yamaha is still building the 2.6L HPDI, they are no longer building any carborated 2-strokes, what ever made it thru the port before 2010 is what we got.
