Targeting Black Drum

Okay. Ive just started to get the hang of targeting some big redfish out of akayak around the chareleston area and wanted to know if there is anything specific I can do to target black drum. Ive caught 50 or so reds but not a single black drum. Any special tips or tricks from you pro’s?

Usually where there are sheepshead, there are black drum. They like structure like barnacles, oysters, docks, etc. I’ve caught some around goat island using shrimp or cut mullet. Hopes this helps a little.

Exactly. They like deep structure.

Shrimp and crabs are better bait than cut mullet for the black drum.

I have personally caught black drum where redfish are located. For example, grasslines are very popular for black drum and also under docks. Shrimp works very well for me. Hope this helps you.

Depends on what size black drum you want to target. Smaller “eatable” black drum hang in the same areas as the smaller red drum, docks, oyster bars, live bottom area, and the front beach around sloughs and gullies. Use FRESH shrimp, fiddlers, oysters, clams, crab. I persoannly have had the best luck with shrimpand fiddlers for smaller drum.

Larger black drum are found around deep structure as stated, pilings, bridges, THE GRILLAGE. Use half of a blue crab. They will bite similar to a sheep so you have to pay attention. They will not take it like a red drum, usually anyway.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips guys! I think i’m gonna start hunting them around drum island, Maybe the grillage. Do you think these are good areas to start?

Use to have huge luck around Morris light. Post up half crab close to rocks on north front of the house. Be careful things can turn fast right there. Big Big Black Drums. Love the fight & the sight. Living free by the Morris light. He he
