Thinking about getting Tarpon 14, anyone know the difference between the 14 and 16 besides the speed, is the 14 very stable for standing and paddling flats, double haul fly casting, etc…/ also are there any other companies out there with comparable yaks in these sizes with all the fishing features? Any input would be appreciated.
talk to dolphin-d,he sells wilderness systems kayaks.sounds to me like you already got it figured out.go see him at time out in mt. pleasant.hes about talked me into the pungo 140.
What is your weight? If under 230lb I recommend the 160I. I just sold one because I take my son out and combined we are at 290lbs (me 240) and that is about the max, it is a fast kayak and I didnt havent any troubles fly casting out of it besides my normal troubles fly casting but I have those standing in my yard.
thanks for the input, I think I’m pretty set on the tarpon 140.
Dillon, if you plan on paddling any kind of distance, think about the 16. I used to paddle the 14, but on open water in the wind it is slow going. The 16 is much quicker. The 14 has a bit more room in the tank well, and in theory is easier to stand up in. I have found that none of them are easy to stand in, especially when the wind is blowing. One solution is a product made by hobie called the Sidekick AMA outriggers. It is quick to assemble and disassemble on the water and provides plenty of stability with inflatable pontoons. Check it out on hobie’s website, and download the accessory catalog.
