Tarpon fishing - drifting or anchored

Still working on this type of fishing.

Does 1 particular method - drifting or anchored - work better?
Or does it depen on the tide and conditions?

Any tips and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

up hear the prefer is anchored up…

allot have been seen in less than 10ft of water and are working the mid water where the creeks dump in on a incoming tide. during the slack tides they will stalk the holes in 3-9 feet of water working the edges of the drop offs… local crabbers have seen them jumping just off of troffs that run across very shallow waters (2-5ft)

seems they are very interested in live bait… poggies, menhaden, goggle eyes ect ect… i know a few cptns that do inshore that have done quite well… ive been given tips but haven’t made a trip myself just was told the generals on what to look for.

they don’t really recommend chasing them as much as staying in one spot and having confidence in it… i would guess if i did it i would work the troffs on a out going/slack tide try and have a live well with 2 out of the 3 baits probably float a bait out allow me to cover a good bit of area…

If you live in the area, grab a copy of the July/August issue of Tideline from Haddrell’s. There’s a good article by local captain J.R. Waits that should at least get you headed in the right direction. Good luck.

Question - a friend of mine saw a lot of tarpon this past weekend. Most of them “rolling on top” . He couldn’t “beg a bite” out of them.
It seems like I read somewhere that when tarpon are doing this, they are not necessarily feeding and are hard to hookup.

Any thoughts?

A friend of mine and I caught one last year drifting and she rolled right before she hit . So take it for what its worth …

Tarpon fishing is nothing more than being in the right place right time , right bait , right fish that wants to eat !
