tarpon fishing in Edisto

Hey Dog House,
Where can I buy flourcarbon leader in Lexington? I checked Wally World but they only have a small selection of mono and no Flouro. leader. Is there any place around here that you know of?

Is Wal-Mart “Wally World” or is that Boater’s world? I actually live in Chas now but I would hope Boater’s World in Cola would carry it. If not, you may have to go the long way to Edisto and cruise by Boaters World (Sam Rittenburg blvd), west marine (on 17S) or Boats US (on 17S) in West Ashley. It’s nice to have the flouro for the tarpons but our water is so murky it’s not as imp. as it is down in florida where they use 40-50lb flouro as leader (I use 150 flouro/crimped) .

Bigger the cushion, deeper the pushin

There is West Marine at Dutch Square(back side) and Boaters World at Harbison in front of Dick’s.
There are BIG sharks in N Edisto. Fished a rip near westbank creek a few weeks ago and hooked 6 nice ones. Need #150 cable leader not to get bite off. It works! I have yet to make it to Dev banks. If staying at marina you can try front of shoals at bay point or shoals out in front of Pine Island. Baitfish pile up there at times and I have seen post of tarps sighted there. Spanish schools there at times. There are large flats all out in front of Pine and Otter Is. I have seen yaks there several times. A lot closer than Dev Bank. Bay Point shoals only 100 yds off beach.
Good luck.

jford-you got mail

Boaters World off Harbison carries mono & flouro leader, as does Barron’s on Harden Street. You really don’t need flouro-I use 100# Ande (in the 50 yard leader spools) & have done pretty well with it. If you use circle hooks almost all of the fish will be hooked in the mouth, and you will land more sharks than you want. Wire leader is not recommended for tarpon & not needed.

Bay Point does hold a lot of tarpon, especially if you can get out a ways, but be careful out there-fairly strong currents & a lot of turbulence around the sand bars. The spanish are thick out there at times.

If you haven’t already you should buy a good nautical chart of that area. You can get them at Barron’s, Boaters World or West Marine. Well worth the money.

Well Dawgcatcher… how’d you do??

actually my buddy was in town from Med School and was staying at his parents on Johns Island and we took his 17ft Sea Pro out to Deveaux Bank and fished the ocean and inland side and didn’t see or catch any Tarpon. We saw a lot of boats out there but didn’t see anyone with a hookup. I had one knockdown which I think was a big Shark but that was it. I got to Edisto late on Sat. night and got in the yak Sunday and paddled out to Pine Island and the bank about 1/2 mile to the right of it. I had finger mullet and menhanden popping all around me, but still couldn’t manage to hook up with anything. It was pretty frustrating, but it beat the hell out of working! I want to learn to throw a cast net from a yak, maybe then I could of hooked up with something. I wish I had driven on the island in the daylight because on the way out I saw a TON of really interesting places that looked like they would hold fish. One in particular was the creek directly next to the Edisto Serpentarium. I don’t want to wait until next year to go try these places, so if any of you guys are ever up for it let me know. It was about 100 degrees everyday I was down there so maybe that slowed down the fishing,or maybe I just wasn’t using the right stuff. All in all I got to fish in my new yak and had a good time. I appreiciate all of you guys advice. I will definitly be back to give it the old college try again soon.

The tarpon have been pretty scarce in & around Port Royal Sound so far this year. Not sure if they are just late in arriving or if it will be a bad year, but so far the pickins are slim.

Glad to hear you had a good time at Edisto.
