tarpon fishing in Edisto

Hello all,
I will be in Edisto in two weeks and have just read the post in the “fishing discussion” forum about Tarpon being sighted/caught around the shell bank on Edisto River or Deveaux bank? Do you guys think I could reach these places in my kayak? If so, how far a paddle is it? Any advice on where to drop in would be helpful too. I will be there from Sunday 7/23 to Wednesday 7/26 if anyone wants to go. Trying for Tarpon would be fun, they do that off the beach in the Gulf Coast of Fla, and they call it the “Sarasota Sleigh Ride”. I have heard it’s easier to boat a Tarpon in a kayak than in a boat. I guess it makes sense because the fish will not only be fighting the drag on the rod but if you turned the boat sideways for the fight it would have the drag on the boat to tire him out too.

Yep, thats a great area to fish.

Put in at cherry point public landing and catch the outgoing tide to deveaux. Sometimes it gets real choppy in the bay, so check the weather before you are a miles out there on an outgoing tide. It is a little bit of a paddle from bohicket creek out to deveaux bank… probably about 3 miles. But you can hug the south end of seabrook and stop for a break and a beer.

No real advice for tarpon out there, but have hooked some big sharks in the same area. Probably my favorite yakfish destination down here.

Good Luck. PB

anybody up for making this trip on Sunday or Monday the 23,24th?

I could make the sunday trip if the weather is good.

keeno,
sounds good. shoot me an email sometime at rcarruthers@capitalbev.com I will check out the tides. Should be fun, I would love to post a the first picture of a Tarpon being caught out of a Kayak!

Try the area behind Deveaux Bank (between the Bank and the shore). That area is one big flat that holds a lot of tarpon, especially early & late in the day-they come up un the flat to feed. Drift live menhaden or mullet.

I see two potential problems with this idea, but if you feel game I say go for it:

  1. There area a lot of big sharks in that area. If you fish for tarpon you are bound to hook a few-and what do you do with a 6-8 foot shark that you have hooked from a kayak, especially when you get him close to the boat?

  2. If you hook a big tarpon & turn the yak sideways you are liable to roll over-they are very powerful fish.

If you go, good luck (in more ways than one [:0]) & post a report with pics if you hook/catch one.

OK-If you want to whet your appetite for the task at hand, check this out! What more inspiration could you possibly need??

wow - that’s nuts man.

Mega,
Thanks for the info. I would like to try that flat. If I fight a fish and find out it’s Jaw’s Jr., I am cutting the line. I will just have to bring plenty of hooks! I just read your profile and saw that you live in Lexington. I just moved to Lexington, so If your ever up to fish Murray or Saluda shoot me an email. Thanks for the advice on Deveaux bank. Hopefully I can get Keeno,Cutmullet, or anybody else to make the trip with me. I think it would be fun and a lot safer to take a fleet of yaks out there.

Dawg-
If you need any more info shoot me an email; welcome to Lexington.

Regarding the guys that caught the tarpon out of a kayak, they have a kayak guide service. Check out the pics from their web site-especially the big snook that was eaten by a big shark. Those guys are nuts!

They also do “beach shark fishing” trips:

From their web site:

“The shark beach itinerary involves arriving at the beach, rigging baits, paddling baits out into the Gulf, dropping the baits, and coming back to the beach awating a hungry shark.” [:0]

i would recommend haveing a chase boat on hand or nearby to help if the tide is too strong or if a fish drags you out…that new pending world record hammerhead in fl, 1280lbs dragged a bay boat 12 miles…good luck and post some pics if you can

You should try and launch from the southern tip of Seabrook Island and paddle to Deveaux bank which you can’t miss in the middle of the inlet (not far at all–maybe a 1/2 mile to the spot) ; if you can’t get on Seabrook then Cherry Point landing off Maybank hwy is your best bet (lock your car). Most hookups and catches are ocean side of the bank in about 3-5 feet of water with menhaden, mullet, whiting, etc. Hope to see you out there hooked up with something big–there’s ussually a boat or two out there that would help you out if needed if your jumping a tarpon from a canoe and head to sea but the tarps don’t always turn deep–may just run along the bank/shoreline. If deveaux is too far away for you, you may have luck around edisto in the surf or close to an inlet if you chum it up. Good luck.

Dog house,
how would I get to that spot from the island? I will be staying close to the Marina. I can’t wait to get out there!

DC you got mail.

Dawgcatcher–If you staying at the marina on Edisto Island, it’s probably too far of a paddle to Deaveaux bank; and because, no bridges, it’s a long car drive from Edisto to Bohicket marina or Seabrook. Seabrook is a private island but is definatley the closest to Deaveaux–they do have a public area just not sure if close to the inlet (you might want to call Seabrook to see what the deal is about public access to ocean). I would get a chart of the area to plan any trip–you’ll see Deveaux bank just south of Seabrook. If you got a boat, you can get there easily by water (just check out chart). You can beach up at low tide on DEveaux and paddle around to the spot or just carry yak across to the oceanside.

p.s. I presume you like to beat up on those dawgs since you live in Lexington; go cocks

Dog House,
Thanks for the info. I am going by boat to Devaux bank on Friday and going to meet up with Keeno on Sunday. Hopefully we’ll get into some good ones. I agree I am living in Gamecock country, but I have seen a lot of Dawg fans around here. I live in a house divided as my wife is a Carolina graduate and fan. It will be a good one this year if we can block. If you aint a Dawg your Dawgfood!

DawgCatcher,
That is quite a long ride from Cherry Point. The current in the North Edisto can get very swift too. It is also prone to getting very rough. If you could throw in from Seabrook Island somewhere, I’d say go for it, but all the way from Cherry Point??? Not me!!!
